Didn't Dylan break his neck in a motorcycle accident? that's gotta have an effect on your singing. (motorpsycho nightmare, another favorite...)

I'm impressed there are so many Dylan fans here.

My favorite is Its All Right (I'm Only Bleeding). Highway 61 Revisted is a close second. But, there are so many...

Dylan was and is great except for his born again period in the 70s.

I thought even his born again period had a few winners. He seemed to let the colored girls (ala Lou Reed) sing more as backup, which is cool.

Oh man I have soooo many!

Right now my favorite is Abandoned Love, such a fantastic song.

Dylan has such a wide range of music that my favorites change almost weekly! Other favorites include:

It's alright ma (I'm only bleeding)
A Hard Rain's a gonna fall
My Back Pages
Positively 4th Street

So many more, a true musical legend.

Wow. Talk about a coincidence. My brother just sent me Dylan's latest, "Together Through Life" as an early Christmas Gift. Have not even had a chance to listen to it yet since reading this thread.

Abandoned Love

I can hear the turning of the key
I've been deceived by the clown inside of me.
I thought that he was righteous but he's vain
Oh, something's a-telling me I wear the ball and chain.

My patron saint is a-fighting with a ghost
He's always off somewhere when I need him most.
The Spanish moon is rising on the hill
But my heart is a-tellin' me I love ya still.

I come back to the town from the flaming moon
I see you in the streets, I begin to swoon.
I love to see you dress before the mirror
Won't you let me in your room one time 'fore I finally disappear?

Everybody's wearing a disguise
To hide what they've got left behind their eyes.
But me, I can't cover what I am
Wherever the children go I'll follow them.

I march in the parade of liberty
But as long as I love you I'm not free.
How long must I suffer such abuse
Won't you let me see you smile one time before I turn you loose?

I've given up the game, I've got to leave,
The pot of gold is only make-believe.
The treasure can't be found by men who search
Whose gods are dead and whose queens are in the church.

We sat in an empty theater and we kissed,
I asked ya please to cross me off-a your list.
My head tells me it's time to make a change
But my heart is telling me I love ya but you're strange.

One more time at midnight, near the wall
Take off your heavy make-up and your shawl.
Won't you descend from the throne, from where you sit?
Let me feel your love one more time before I abandon it.

A thought on the argument about Dylan's singing ability (or lack thereof): Why is that so many of songs sound better when other people sing them?
Saying that, I don't mind his voice, but it is his lyrics that really do it for me.

My parents just saw him last year, and they said that no one could understand a word he was saying. The concert was in BC, so perhaps the BC bud just hit him hard and left him particularily groggy that night.

I can't agree with your first point there. None of Dylans songs sound better when someone else sings them. As someone above mentioned, it's probably because you just don't "get" Dylan in the same way as his diehard fans do. It's a connection between not only the lyrics but the way in which he delivers them in a way that you can relate that makes him special.

Your second point, I agree. I think Dylan these days sounds terrible and if he was just new on the scene with no prior history I would think he was awful too.

But in his earlier years are amazing. I'll link you to a few of his songs from the 1963 Newport festival. Just look at the crowd mesmerized by him and the people sitting behind him just smiling in amazment at what they are seeing;

If his voice is "crap" in those videos then there's nothing that will change your mind on him Wink

Those who say Dylan can't sing I usually direct to songs like 'Moonshiner' .......he really shows his singing skills on that one.

Dylan's reply to his lack of singing; "The notes are all there."

Haven't seen "Sylvio" mentioned yet. That and Lily, Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts are probabally my favorite upbeat Dylan songs.

Blind Willie McTell, Catfish for his bluesy stuff...

Arthur McBride was alays a favorite of mine...

Idiot Wind and Masters of War for his more meaningful stuff.

Been a Dylan fan since I was fifteen. Damn near 25 years.

same here, but considering he has made music for almost 50 years, he got us both beat by a mile
