Couldn't Dexter just say that he was doing some vigilante work, and took the name Kyle Butler to protect Miami Metro? Maybe he could say he got concerned since his sister's life was threatened from the previous shooting, and got interested in the Frank Lundy case to help out his sister. I guess he could get in trouble with his workplace for that since he was withholding information or something like that, but I don't see why he couldn't get off easy.

What, vigilante work for a week or so with Trinity? And not calling it in? That's more than a slap-on-the-wrist. Technically, Rita is dead because of Dexter's prolonged inaction on Trinity, and that kid almost died as well. Actually, if Dexter had kept the cops fully in the loop, Trinity would have been caught as he bashed a vic's head in.

As for the remains of the kid, I still think it had to be an older kill. Masuka said something along the lines of the kid's remains having "decayed" quite a bit. It had to be a kid from a previous cycle at a different site. Remember, they only started unearthing the concrete after cadaver dogs had been through the premises. The kid had been buried for quite some time.

I think it's quite possible that trinity needs certain kills at certain times on that cycle. If he doesn't kill a kid at *this* time, there's no point in doing it the next day. I figure he just resumed his cycle, but with a definite target this time. Trust me, I'm quite good at understanding the minds of the insane. Very, very good.

I'm so upset by this ending I don't even know what to say - I'm gonna hold onto the hope that it's some sort of dream sequence until next year - despite how ridiculous that would be.

Not gonna lie - I kind of wished for that too.
But the "it was a dream" cop-out is so lame that I don't think I could forgive the writers for THAT, either. Remember that Family Guy ending in Stewie kills Louis, where it ends up being a simulation?
The exchange went something like:

Brian: So, what youre saying is that what you experienced in the simulation didnt really happen, or even matter?

Stewie: Yes, thats correct.

Brian: So, it was sort of like a dream?

Stewie: No, it was a simulation.

Brian: Yes, but, theoretically, if someone watched the events of that simulation from start to finish, only to find out that none of it really happened, I mean you dont think, that would, just be just like a giant middle finger to them?

Stewie: Well, hopefully, they would have enjoyed the ride.

Brian: I dont know, man. I think youd piss a lot of people off that way.

Remember how Dexter's mother-in-law thinks he's a drug addict from back in season 2? There's no one she's going to let a drug-addict stepfather raise her grandchildren. And since Rita died in suspicious circumstances and she barely knows Dexter I think she's going to be a big problem next season. And she's basically a normal person except a controlling type, so it's not like he can kill her off.

It is weird how Dexter was indirectly responsible for the death of both of those kids parents.

d that in last season the writing was becomming uncomfortable with the morality of what Dexter was doing. He was being portrayed less as being a hero and more as a problem. With his killing of an innocent this season (and even while watching it you knew the guy was innocent, Dexter competletely threw away his need for proof) Dexter is now fair game and must be taken down. You just don't kill and get away with it.

Worst season yet.

Hope Dex actually kills some bad guys next year.

I think the foreshadowing points to Dexter getting the chair, or maybe taking the easy way out.

I remember hearing in the news when the BTK killer was caught about how he had a family and was a respected member of his church. He was actually president of the church council. So when I saw the episode where we find out the Trinity killer had a family and we saw him at church that made me wonder if they got the idea from the BTK killer. Then I just read this wikipedia article about him and it also mentioned how the police department got DNA from a pap smear that his daughter had which lead to his arrest.

There are actually more differences than similarities between the two cases, but I'm thinking perhaps they were influenced by some parts.

I hated Rita too. But I was stunned when she died...and a little sad. I've thought about it...and I think it's because she represented hope and redemption. She represented Dexters only chance of overcoming his 'dark passenger'. With Rita gone, we know that Dexter is doomed. I think the next season will be brutal, dark, and very, very good!! i can't wait!

Holy crap. I read through all these posts and no one gets it!! You guys need to get clued in. Julie Benz (Rita) isn't going anywhere-her contract with Chip Johannessen runs til 2012. Watch the last episode again-there's a clue about 3-4 minutes from the end that Dex is (may be?) dreaming. Google Chip Johannessen Filmography and if you dig deep enough you'll connect the dots.
