As one poster wrote, go to the police and explain what happened. Get someone to write it down for you if your korean isn't good.

I would also be posting ALL his info here. What email address did he use? What did he say his name was? Maybe someone will recognize something.

He called himself Paul Schweitzer when he contacted me. He claimed to be the DESL member Schweitzer. His bank info when I went to make the transfer was KoDa. I asked him about that, and he said that it was his wife's account. That should have been enough of a warning sign, but for some reason I believed him. I won't post the whole email thread, but he came off as quite genuine and trustworthy.

Apparently his name is David Ko. He may or may not live in Seoul. This is his bank info:

1002-537-086363
Woori Bank

If anyone knows this guy, PM me.

Just curious, if an American rips me off here, and then goes back to the States, he's pretty much off the hook, right?

That happened to me about a year ago--a guy--Ryan Chaif--ripped me and another guy off before pulling a midnight run from his school. He said he was on a trip around the world and that he had sent me a cheque from China, but I later found out that he and his wife had returned to New York to manage his in-law's new restaurant. There was no cheque.

It wasn't a lot of money (80,000 or so), so I haven't lost any sleep over it, but I do wonder if I shouldn't pay him a visit next time I'm in the States . . .

On the other hand, I'm going to be selling a big pile of stuff (likely hundreds of items) in the next few months before I move. I don't live anywhere near Seoul, so I'm thinking that I'll have to send stuff through the mail. I don't feel too good about sending an item before payment has been made, but what I've done in the past to assure buyers is to promise a tracking number for the package within 24 hours of payment, as well as providing sufficient personal information so they can contact me if there are any problems. Most of my items will be of interest to foreigners, but if it is too much trouble/risk, then I'll have to just list my things on the Korean auction sites.
Are there any other forums that work better than Dave's?

I am sure you have already been to the police about this right? What actions have you taken so far?

Here is the IP address David Ko posted the ad from: 58.234.183.33

He posted his original ad on another site "waygookinmall", which lists your IP when you post...of course this could be a PC Bang. I emailed the ISP for that IP, but I seriously doubt that they'll email me back.

I am not sure if anyone else can do something with an IP.

Just a web search for that IP shows other postings by 임현승, but they are completely unrelated...there is a phone number for him/her 02-3406-9241, 02-3406-9243 if someone wanted to call who speaks Korean to find out at least where the computer is located.

A web search for David Ko in South Korea also pops up a Facebook page...I sent him several messages asking if he was the David Ko who sold XBox games with no response. I told him that if he did not respond to deny that he was the guy that I would assume it was him. There was a photo of him in front of a Chung Dahm Learning sign, but I found out that he no longer works there.

I can't believe I'm typing this, but I think I just got ripped off.

A few days ago, I made a thread entitled "WTB: Xbox 360." No one replied, but I got an email the next day from a guy who said he couldn't send pms yet. He told me he had an Xbox 360 to sell, along with a bunch of games. He asked me if I lived near Mokpo. Of course, I don't, so I told him that he'd have to ship it if I bought from him. I asked him for a phone number, intending to give him a call before sending any money. He gave me a number, but told me that it was a prepaid phone that he had to reactivate.

We negotiated a price, and I sent the money today. His emails were pretty convincing. And furthermore, I had made quite a few purchases on this forum over the last year and never had a problem.

When I got home, I sent him a followup email. A few minutes later, I got a message in my inbox from yahoo telling me that the message was undeliverable. Very fishy.

The guy used a Woori bank account. Since I have an account #, there must be a way to track him down. I think I'm going to have to make a trip to the police office on Monday.

I would say that in the future, it's fair to ask sellers to ship first. If anything goes wrong, at least you have a physical address as a seller. As a buyer, all you have is a bank account.

So have you been to the police yet? Any progress?

I have bought several items here like car navigation, PS2 all through shipping. One time I bought a mountain bike for W250,000.
But after all this scams happening it is very difficult to trust now. Too bad as it was very convinient.

Not sure when I'll be able to go to the police. It's winter break now, and I'm doing camps. On top of that, my English-speaking co-worker is rarely around. They've basically thrown me to the wolves at my school. I'll talk to her tomorrow if I see her and see if she'd be willing to help me contact the police.

From the info that we've put together, the guy is gyopo, so he may not have an alien card, he could be on a Korean passport.

If he's on a korean passport, he's korean and he'd have a national ID card.
If he's a gyopo on another passport and he's here for more than a couple months he's probably on an F4 and I think gyopos get ARCs.

well this is a serious matter. u got scammed. um sure your school would give you a couple of hours to go to the police station. at least get the ball rolling. this guy might not even be in the country. personally i wouldnt even do anything about it. like i said, i really dont think the police with be that helpful. others may argue. well i guess we shall see how it works out for you at the police station.. time will tell.
