It was a massive priority for Canada though. Germany, for example....I'm pretty sure they would trade every medal won for another world cup.

Really? I am willing to bet the athletes that busted their arse to get those medals would disagree.

I think if you put it to a nationwide vote they would be outvoted by a very large margin. i know I would give every single honor that Ireland has achieved in any Olympics or any other event for a world cup. most people I know would be in the same boat.

Obviously this is extremely hypothetical and just a way to say that football/soccer is way more important in Germany than any niche sport.

The reason Canada can do so well in these olympics is that most countries are not prepared to sink resources in such niche sports for cultural reasons.

When you live in Canada it is next to impossible to not be a hockey fan. I would say the same thing is true about football for the UK or basketball in the USA.

That Canada won the gold medal was an extremely emotional moment for Canadians. Hosting the Olympics and winning the most gold was certainly sweet, but if Canada had lost the men's hockey I think many Canadians would have been so sad that the other medals would make no difference. Hockey Night in Canada is still the most popular show on Canadian TV.
