One thing that surprises me about him is that he often talks about his smoking marijuana, but he seems so sharp upstairs. Do you think he's joking about his marijuana use?
If Bill Maher smoked marijuana, I'd expect him to talk the speed of Willy Nelson or Snoop Dog. |

he openly talks about drug use and constantly asks why pot is illegal while alcohol and pharma pills are not.
I'm sure he's a pot smoker, albeit a recreational one, rather than a pothead. I know a lot of older guys fairly high up and accomplished in the business world, who still toke it up once in while. |

Don't be ridiculous. Moderate pot use has far less effect on your cognitive ability than moderate alcohol consumption. If he smoked 10 minutes before going on stage, you could expect him to be impaired. If he smoked the night before, you likely wouldn't know. |

There's some truth to the stereotype about cannabis spacing you out, but (as usual), it's more complicated than a straightforward "smart/dumb" dichotomy:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20122742
Basically, cannabis has the observable effect of expanding the scope of associations the substance naive mind is normally apt to deal in. In those without much in the way of knowledge or communication skills to begin with, this effect will probably manifest in dopey non sequiturs (literally, ideas that don't follow). In those who already know their stuff, the same effect will more likely enhance creativity through meaningful connections between a variety of far ranging and normally unrelated topics. |

I haven't known anyone who wasn't already somewhat slower than the rest become any slower through the use of marijuana. |

| Maher is an elitist and he is smug. Sara Palin is dim and has no business being in national politics, but her family doesnt deseve to be called white trash repeatedly show after show. I have a problem with him calling Americans stupid as if the US is the only country that has stupid people. Some of his stuff is funny and I agree with some of his politics ( although its really just common sense). |
I agree with not dragging sarah's family into it
HOWEVER.
it's Sarah that often brings her family INTO politics and makes them political props for political purposes (done by most politicans of all parties, but GOPers take this to new and ridiculous heights with their "family" agendas and then showing off their Stepford wives/spouses) |

| I don't get this whole obsession with weed. Marijuana has to be one of the most overrated things in human history. |

Do you mean for the enthusiasts, or for those who would restrict its use? |

Both. While it's not physically harmful, it's not great either. If someone needs a crutch and they don't have access to weed, they'll just get their hands on something else so it might as well be weed.
That being said, it only ever made me groggy and stupid at the best of times and gave me panic attacks at the worst. Sometimes it made me think deep but it never had a very positive effect on me. I don't see what's so great about it. |

| Pretty good show, used to watch it every week. Although I got really annoyed after a while at how overly-opinionated Maher comes across as being and how it SO obviously panders to a certain demographic (similar to the Daily Show and Glen Beck). The CONSTANT marijuana-references he makes in his jokes are pretty stupid too (we get the hint). So I stopped. Plus, I moved out of my parents house and stopped getting HBO.. |

how do you watch Real Time over here? (assuming you are in Korea)
new episodes always get deleted on youtube. i download the podcasts but sometimes miss out on the jokes you need to SEE. i found a site called billtv or something like that a while ago but i don't remember the exact name.

I hold very liberal views and I watch Maher's show pretty much every week. I love his New Rules, and I like watching smart people debate - it's so rare that you actually get to see it happen.
I think his familiarity with black guests can be a bit OTT. Maybe they know that he is absolutely not racist, so he gets away with it, in the same way gay guys can get away with saying sexy things to women without coming off as horny sleazebags. Just a theory.
As much as I like the show, a few things annoy me:
last year, he was always going on about milk, and it's potential dangers for humans. Any chance he got.
There aren't enough REpublican / right-wing guests. He needs to have 2 right-wingers to even out the sides. Too often the right-winger gets shouted down, and I'd prefer to see people win a FAIR fight.
Sometimes he advocates an agenda like it's the most important thing in the world, but it's generally something topical or he doesn't know enough about it, which makes me think he heard it at a party that week and looked it up on Wikipedia. I could be wrong, but he comes off that way sometimes.
All in all a good show, and I'd watch the equivalent right-wing show too if there was one. |

I'd have to agree with you on that one. Sure, it was pandering and gloating, but it was done so well. |
