Right, Korea presents a very lonesome experience for many because we are separated geographically instead of ghettoized into a group as teachers are sparsely spread out instead of grouped like soldiers. Unlike soldiers working togethor on a job, teachers don't work togethor like soldiers do so this leaves teaching a very lonesome way to go. Many Americans back home also use the internet, because they find they can't connect locally with anyone so they go online to vent, talk, laugh, and live. Much of this distancing is not a personality or psych disorder, but it's a result of technology and globalization. i.e. cars, cell phones, computers, cultural differences, and simply protecting oneself from crime. Must be tough for those who don't know the home row of a keybourd. |

As I only have 3 more days left before I leave for Afghanistan, I have come to realize that the things I complain about are miniscule compared to what I will encounter when I reach Kabul- hooches, frequent power outages, constant rocket and mortar attacks. All the small things I found that irked me in Korea and the attitudes of people, local and foreign, that pissed me off here are minute compared to the complete alien environment I will be facing in Afghanistan.
I am not saying that it is awful to complain too much about being here, but I think it is good to take a step back to see what you have compared to what you could be facing either back home or anywhere else. |

Sure there's negativity on the board, but you shouldn't let a few complainers represent the expat community here.
One thing that's easy to overlook is the percentage of complainers compared to the number of foreign teachers here, not just the Dave's posters.
A lot of teachers here don't bother with Dave's or just read it for information or entertainment.
They may have issues here as well, but they use other outlets to deal with it. |
