| I would have thought the US and Canada having so many immigrants, at least a few of them would have started up some kind of European style cafe, so you could take a pass on generic style eateries like Starbucks serving simply shocking coffee. I guess my place of birth is lucky on that front, no need to go to Paris or Rome when I can eat and drink like a European in my own backyard, and a latte served in a glass, not some mug that weighs half a tonne, now there is a dream. |

There are tons of European cafes. But their business model is reliant upon being a small local place that caters to hipsters and yuppies. If this kind of restaurant was a franchise it would be, well, it would be a breakfast Olive Garden and eww.
No one beats a good American local breakfast place (my hometown one is called Goldy's). With amazing eggs benny, cute tattooed waiters, and Built to Spill playing over quiet but giddy voices, what's not to love?. Not to mention FREE locally roasted coffee for when you endure the hour plus long wait on the weekend.
PS. Did you know white people like breakfast places? http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/01/28/36-breakfast-places/ |

Built to Spill playing in the background, that sounds great (even though latest LP has too many psychedelic ballads.)
I'm a little over the "alternative" cafes. I dress like a yuppie these days, and even though I like the alternative vibe, I don't like 1st year arts students looking at me like, "who is this straight guy?".
A menu of soft melts, croissants, salads, sour dough bread, and fine coffee with some chill out music would be more up my alley these days. |

Ah. Never had a real job so passing time in SK until you get lucky?!?
Well, good luck with your bad attitude. It does seem to permeate your posts and life. Interviewing committees will hopefully ignore it if you go for an entry level job. Something around minimum wage I reckon as for accomdation you did seem to make note of a basement. Hope your long suffering parents are of the forgiving sort.
Good luck. While you certainly don't deserve it, I won't begrudge you getting it. Job envy is a terrible mental illness.

| Hmm... So you are spending your Sunday morning on Dave's working out your insecurities? That's a shame. When I was in Korea, I enjoyed exploring on the weekends. I certainly didn't have this job envy complex. I guess it was because I knew I would eventually return to my industry. Being skilled and educated has it's advantages. |
Number 1 - It was about 12:30 when I posted, I then went to meet friends, play frisbee (a game I had never played before until last weekend) went for a run after that at stadium close by and then kicked my rugby ball around for a bit........well before getting told to get my ass of they pitch they had just re-seeded yesterday.
Number 2 - I don't have any insecurities, I like to come to daves to help out, read other people's stories and generally have a little nosey at the life of others.

| I'm taking it easy during the holiday weekend. Oh before I forget, I didn't return to Korea for a third year. Instead, I found a job in my industry and have been gainfully employed for 5 years. A steady salary enables vacations. It's great not to be bound to a hogwon's schedule. You could have this life too but the chip on your shoulder might be a problem. Start planning now and put the videogames away. |
I worked here for 18 months from feb 2007-july 2008 and went back home to do my masters degree, which I completed and graduated it last December. I am heading to the philippines in August for 9 days, last sept I was in St. Lucia for 2 weeks, in January I was in Manchester and Birmingham in England for 5 days and I have pretty sweet holidays here too. In fact some of the teachers in my school or heading for mongolia next month for the week we have off. I am just going to tour some old spots in Korea I haven't seen for almost 2 years.
As for a chip on my shoulder, I don't have one, I am not the one coming on to forums bragging about the life I wished I was living when really i'm crashing in my parent's basement.........how is it down there anyway??

| Actually, last week's Saturday breakfast was much better. Pecan Pancakes with a side order of Virginia Ham. Quite enjoyed spending time in Colonial Williamsburg. Recommended if you get the chance. |
That entire paragraph means absoloutly nothing to me. I am more of a cornflakes and perhaps a bit of toast kinda guy and as for colonial williamsburg??? Never heard of it!!

| Happily single at the moment. But I'm curious is your SO, one of your adult students? Or, did you join a church or plead with a 10K juice girl at a club? Not judging but I doubt your SO came with from your home country. |
I know this wasn't directly aimed at me but since you asked anyway, I have been with my g.f for over 5 and a half years, I met her in college, we both came to korea the first time, we both went home and obtained the same masters degree and we are both back out here again.
I am not a lifer either, I tried for about 3 months to get a good job in my sector back home but unfortunately I lack the experience, but I'm only 25 and have a great education so I have lots of time left before I need to start worrying.
Enjoy your time in Tim Hortons, whatever Tim Hortons is?? |

Montreal bagels are Canadian, I guess. Tim Horton's doesn't count, they do a bad copy of a new york style bagel. But Montreal bagels are Bagels. |

I have had a real job, just not a career focused job. I worke dmy entire way through college and also for a while after I graduated. Not to mention the fact that I now teach over 14 kids and have done so in the past, but then I suppose with your superior abilities to mine and the others who frequent this forum, you don't see esl teaching as a 'real job'?

I have a bad attitude? When I left Korea and started my masters I never once came on this site to try and annoy other posters with tales of what I am doing and how much better it is back home. I wish I could say he same about you, but I can't, you have started this thread, another called So, what are Ex- teachers doing now? and a 3rd one called What are a Lifer's Biggest Regrets? all of which have been pointless and all of which have mentioned how you travel to places.
What is the big deal about going to places on business, My g.f's brother used to always have to travel to India, germany, mexico, china, japan and crap loads of other countries. He hated it, I would hate it too. Spending all your time on a plane or in a hotel without actually having the benefit of viewing the country??? No thanks

Haven't lived at home since I turned 18!! My parents are hardly long suffering they would love to see me more often.
Minimum wage back home is 8.75 an hour which works out at 18,200 basic pay without any overtime for a years work. Even though nobody except students work for this amount, if they did it would work out at about 27.5 million won a year or 2.3 million won a month which is more than a lot of first time teachers out here would make.

You haven't even said what you do, so how could I be envious?? I was offered a job that involved me travelling around england, Ireland, spain, France, Italy and Germany. I could have made it sound really awesome too by saying I was travelling all over Europe, and it would have sounded great too but I suppose I wouldn't of had to mention it would have involved trying to increase the orders of sausage casings (skin) being purchased from the halal factory trying to employ me.
Course i don't deserve it. I worked my ass off to get through my honours degree and my masters. Have no debt as I paid for myself. I could have stayed in Ireland and went on social welfare for a long time and received 200 a week from the government and also had my rent paid for too, but I decided to come back out here, and work for a year. leaving behind my family and young nephew not to mention all my friends just so I wouldn't be relying on others to pay my way for me.
Yes, you're right, I don't deserve it!!

| Heh. Got jumped on during the Roll Up the Rim to Win promotion. Anyway, just posted the original message while cheerily munching away. Pity the grouch's hijacked my thread. In conclusion, don't be bitter and enjoy each day as a new chance to improve upon your ill manners. |

I would guess extremely unhappily single and missing Korea cause he could get a date here with someone way out of his league as opposed to home. Have fun counting your cash. |

| Oh yeah, I forgot that if you're making money you can't have a midlife crisis. Maybe it's time to buy a Mazda Miata...? Top down, baby |
