I think the best thing is to find a hobby. I live in Daegu the worst city in korea, trust me. I visit pohang almost every weekend where i go windsurfing and have met many other windsurfers who speak english. I think Pohang is a great city unfourtunatly money keeps me in Daegu at present time. 2 years ago I was ready to leave this god forsaken country until I bought all my windsurf gear. Making friends with locals is not easy pick up a hobby and join a club your likely to meet someone who can speak English. I think koreans are crazy about clubs I've even seen one for the type of car you drive.

Logical advice but impractical.

Daegu rocks, imo.

Joe's hobbies are not 'Korean hobbies."

So, while logical advice, it's impractical: especially in Ulsan.

Sports suck, save pro-wrestling -and why? Because it doesn't take itself seriously, it's a show, not a "sport," and fans never riot.

I 'spose windsurfing ha the same appeal.

Windsurfing in Pohang? When I lived there I NEVER met anyone who did that, epecialy considering there were ver yfew places to do it (way out near Weolpo beach, perhaps - but not Pukbu).

This also refers to the hockey thing - it's WAY too early in the morning in Ulsan and, frankly - it's not an activity I enoy. It's also mostly foreigner-populated.

I'd like to get to know more locals.

In other cities (including Daegu) this has not been a problem for me. ONLY Ulsan.

Mokpo pics

there are plenty of reasons why i consider mokpo the place to live in korea..

1st... anywhere in mokpo for under 5,000 in a taxi
beautiful place. too much to see
friendly people. completely surprising how different these people are to any other city i have been to.
plenty of nightlife. no expat bars as such but you always bump 1 or 2 foreigners and somebody knows where everybody is going on friday or saturday nights. plenty of parties at peoples houses or apartments.
plenty of foreigners. not just esl teachers but ship builders and miners of all nationalities
plenty of department stores and supermakets (offering western stuffs)
going out for the night and ending up on the esplanade at hadang with a dozen beers drinking til sunrise and watching all the fitness (and fashion) freaks doing their thing at first light
heading down to the station at 6am and finding a dozen or so old alcos drinking beers and soju out front.. having them near shit their pants when i get a few beers and rock up and say gday.. then having them welcome me like a brother and proceed to enjoy breakfast together
visiting the local islands by ferry.. i could probably do a different island each weekend for the length of my contract
plenty of new motels. decked out with all the mod cons and overlooking the water for 30,000 a night

and now, with the bullet train, it is about 2 & 1/2 hours from seoul.

it is not typical korea, it is its own little world and it is just great.

it would most certainly be the first place i would shop for a job it that situation ever arose again in the future.

i strongly suggest having a look down there joe

good luck bro!

Thanks Wylde. Fantastic pics. The one with the city shrouded in fog was awesome.

It's definitely on Joe's list of "spend a weekend and investigate."

No pubs though?

Muchas gracias,

Joe
