There is no real "correct" or "incorrect" any more, if there ever was.
The English Language is the stupidest, make it up as you go along language there is.
People used to say how are you and I would say "I am good" then peole told me that i couldnt be "good" but that I can be "well"
Screw that, good means positive.
I have actually created a full month of lesson plans on the absurdity and stupidity of the Englihs language.
This is a classic example of where introducing negatives in this way is stupid an confusing.
Didnt you see the monkey?
Yeah
Yeah you did? or Yeah You didn't?
Yeah I didn't
So say "no" then
HUH?
In our langauge you have a rule like "ie before e except after c" and then have over 500 words that break that rule ( about as many that follow it) sorry then theres no rule
There are TEN different ways to pronounce "OUGH" in words.
Ravel and unravel mean the same thing
so does flammable and imflammable
Regardless and irregardless
SO as for this couldn't care less thing
I COULD CARE LESS what is proper, there is no such thing as proper in the english language anymore. we recently added the word "D'oh" into it for God's sake, there are no standards anymore.
Its impossible to be an expert in the English Language unless you have like a 180 IQ and graduated University before you hit puberty.
There is no organisation, rhyme or reason to the language as it was basically stolen from like 5 others.
We don't really have to look at "what does it literally suggest" when you say "I could care less" the meaning is conveyed, and that is the point of language, to convey meaning. Not to be snooty snobby buggers who need to correct people that they can not finish a sentence with a preposition( when you can) or start a sentence with "and" when you can, or other equally elitist crap that simply intends to show intillectual superiority. |
If you have created 'a full month of lesson plans on the absurdity and stupidity of the Englihs language' then perhaps you could create a further month's lesson plan on spelling and punctuation. Just an idea. |

Do you have anything useful to add to the discussion, or are you generally this useless in your posts? |

If you care so little about English that you can't even be bothered to communicate properly then I'd hate to be your student. And when you CAN communicate properly, you write things like: 'I COULD CARE LESS what is proper, there is no such thing as proper in the english language anymore. we recently added the word "D'oh" into it for God's sake, there are no standards anymore.' What on Earth do you teach your students? What do your students learn? 'there are no standards anymore'... Your poor students. |

Dont judge me buddy, you know nothing about me.
this is an informal website, spelling mistakes or punctuation asside, you generally understand what I am saying. As a teacher I take pride in my job and strive for perfection, however even I am humble enough to know that I can make mistakes, especially when yo have such a ridiculous lanaguage where knowledge of spelling is practically an oxymoron.
I teach my students COMMUNICATION! and if they say couldnt care less, or could care less, the message gets across.
I also teach grade 4,5,6, as you can imagine, not a lot of call for technically advanced grammar situations while teaching "What will you do this summer" to 90 % of them
The fact is that there are barely any standards in English anymore, deosn't mean I don't teach what they are.
But I also have lesson plans for the flipside that basically show how stupid the language actually is when it comes to learning it.
The Korean Adults I taught the lessons to loved it, and they gained a better appreciation for just how stupid and difficult the language is for even a native speaker.
I have a 138 IQ, went to University for 6 years, got degrees in both English and Education, have been a teacher for over 6 years, and write short stories and novels in my spare time. yet there are still thousands of words that I can not spell without a spell checker, and I still misuse the comma on a regular basis.
Doesn't mean I don't care, it just shows that I am aware of the difficulties of the lanaguage and aware that mastery of it is not something many have, and being snobby about something when you understand full well what a person is trying to say is moronic. |

The quality and content of a person's writing can say a lot about that person, whether it is a formal essay or an informal post on a message board. I doubt someone who is as smart as you claim to be would be so sloppy in his writing or use a word like "stupid" to describe something as complex as language. It may be difficult to learn, involve contradictory rules, and be constantly changing, but stupid? I don't think so. |

Yes, they do. Facts that you have illustrated wonderfully.
Do you know how to use English properly? |

Often I do, yet there are a number of times when I do not. Knowing how to use English effectively in all cases is a practical impossibility.
There are many cases where I dont know how, and there are many cases where I simply am a bad typist. |

All your other poinst are pretty much moot ( about the parties etc ) I agree with that.
But yes while we are not like to get rid of cars or other crap that pollutes we CAN say to the individual smoker, you know what buddy, that your disgusting choice" and you have no right to do it around me.
I don't cop out to the fact that there are other things that Kill us, yeah that's true, so why not cut out something that we CAN do something about?
I agree with you that buildings should have the right to make their building smoking or not, If they have a free standing building OR they have individual ventillation sysytems.
Its actually kind of my point that if there were certain apartments that WERE non smoking and others that were, then I would know where to get my apartments and not have to worry about crappy dumb ass smoking on his toilet and infecting my bathroom while I try to brush my teeth. |
Still have no clue what you were trying to communicate here. |

Basically I am saying that "the environment is already being polluted" is not an excuse to do nothing about smoker. We can still bug a smoker and try to get smokers to stop, in fact, it may be the one issue where could actually bring about a change.
I am saying we CAN so and say something about smoking people. And that if the had their own apartments in Korea, and were not allowed to smoke in the otheer ones then we would not have people like me being infected with some, and poisoned in our own houses, where no one can do anything about it. |

I'd suggest you stop drinking and posting this convoluted stuff simultaneously, Seoulio. It's getting too funny. I mean morbidly funny. Trees for the forest, anyone?
But what the hey, post away. Sock it to em! |

Clearly smoking people is wrong, both euphemistically and literally.
Ambiguity can really make for some messy misunderstandings.
A good test is to put such things in written form; one's intended meaning ought to be unmistakable and clear.
All in good fun. Play on.
