| I think i was like 3 or 4 years old when my mom bought me the Matthew Wilder LP. You know the one with "Break my Stride" and the other minor hit "The Kid's American." Damn I wore that ish out when I was like 4 years old. Still have all those keyboard melodies and basslines in my head....Matter of fact I'm going to go to youtube and rock out with my bleepity bleep out to Matthew Wilder...HOLLA!!!! |

| My first album was either Weird Al Yankovich - Even Worse or The Spin Doctors - Turn It Upside Down. The first one I bought with my own money was They Might Be Giants - Flood, which is still one of my favorites. |

| I think that mine was either Lick it Up by Kiss or Out of the Cellar by Ratt. |

my first album? it was the late seventies, i bought two, both on eight track: the soundtracks to The Muppet Movie and Saturday Night Fever. Kermit the Frog's The Rainbow Connection and the Bee Gee's Staying Alive were on par in my books, and over time I came to appreciate the wisdom of the comparison, but with considerably less fondness. |

First time I bought music, I bought 3 CDs
There is Nothing Left to Lose - Foo Fighters
So Much for the Afterglo - Everclear
Battle of Los Angeles - Rage Against the Machine
I still listen to those three albums. Probably have a few hundred (maybe over a thousand for Afterglo) plays on each. |
Love all those. Most Eveclear I don't like but So Much for the Afterglow I can listen to anytime. |

Does anyone remember that cassette tape membership deal where you would get like 10 free tapes of your choice for signing up, and then you were required to purchase 10 or so more for ridiculous prices over the next year?
I remember looking through a huge list and checking off the ones I wanted.
I can't remember the name, it could have been a Canadian only thing. It was about 20 years ago.. |

| I remember that kinda deal with CD's. I would sign up get some that I wanted then cancel the deal. They would keep sending CD's and notices or payment and my mom called them one day and told them I was only 13 they stopped sending stuff. Most of the CD's they offered were crap but I was 13 and they were free. |

Heck, I practically remember the 78rpm wind-up Victrola disk of the month
You are probably thinking of Columbia Records. I never went in for it, but my best friend did and got saddled with quite a bill. We had it in the States, too. My late brother was in a similar club with Longines Symphonette (8-track tapes). |

I remember those. I would beg my mom to let me do it because it was (seemingly) such an awesome deal. She, in her infinite wisdom, and despite my pleading, would not allow it. Not until you reminded me about this was I thankful to her. |

ㅋㅋ No such thing as a free lunch.
We had that exact same thing (Columbia Records) in NZ up until about 5 years ago. There was a book version as well. I think the democratizing effect of the internet might have finally killed it off. |

The first casette tape I ever bought for myself was... Aqua. |
Despite their mainstream success, Aqua's music is actually under rated. There lesser hits show more than adequate song craft and lyricsm. Even their cheesey numbers are bubblegummified bangn' club beats that would' ve been more than at home in late 90's Ibiza. They released a greatest hits recently with a few new tracks. One a 90s encore and one a completely competent modern pop song.
My theory is that they were actually potentially great musicians but chose to take the cash instead. |
I'll have check this new song out. Been awhile since I've really heard any of their music.
Of course, at 9 or ten-years-old, I wasn't really thinking about any of that 'deep/good music' or all of that. As soon as I noticed that they had pirates, jungles, and aliens in their music videos, I decided that they were probably the best people that I would ever come across ever. Finally, music that I can relate to! Kind of. I really wanted to be a pirate who lived on a tropical island back then. |
