I completely agree with the overnight buses!! Buses in Japan are the way to go, if you don't get the Japan Rail Pass.
A bus between Tokyo-Kyoto can go as low as 4000 yen, instead of 12,000 yen for Shinkansen!
They're quite easy to figure out, too. In Tokyo, go to Shinjuku station, and there is a bus terminal, you can go anywhere in Japan from there, and choose any fares/schedules.
As for Shinkansen, if you plan on making more than one round trip between Tokyo and Kyoto (for instance), then get it. It's the best deal!! I currently am a resident in Japan so unfortunately I cannot get the JR Pass.... oh I wish I did. Trains are ridiculously expensive here. |
