There's a lot of ignorance here about football (American football).

There is incredible footwork involved in the offensive and defensive lines. 330 pound men very light and quick on their feet. It takes a LOT of skill along with the strength that isn't noticed by people who don't understand the game.

Also, the padding makes people hit harder than in rugby. They figure "Well, I have a helmet on, I can lead with my head and it won't hurt". But then it does. Plus, players don't wear hardly any padding on their legs or midsections. It's basically just helmets and shoulder pads. Hardly a lot of padding.

You guys should read some books on sports and politics, about why England plays soccer and the US plays baseball. There are some great books on the subject.

Why would anyone that likes rugby support New Zealand and/or Australia, when South Africa, the current world champions, consistently beat the Aussies and Kiwis? May as well support England in the soccer world cup, just for lulz of course.

I'm pretty sure that 'football' originally meant 'played on foot' as opposed to 'played on horseback'. When Rugby and Football split you could still catch the ball in football. It wasn't until later that the rule changed. Therefore the name is not a reference to kicking.

I tend to think of football as a family of games that have common origins and influenced each other. American Football, Association Football (soccer), Gaelic Football, Aussie Rules, Rugby and Rugby League are all types of football.

I posted this elsewhere, but feel the need to quote a good friend on this:

Soccer is like a Stephen King novel; A long slow build up of tension that you know will eventually end. Afterwards, you realise it really was just a long boring story with some people running away or towards something.

And then Monday happens.

I'd love to watch the match between Holland and Denmark. But no time. Two assignments to finish off by Friday. Sad

I suppose my World Cup 2010 wont really take off until next week. Let's hope the best is yet to come!
