I think that LDJS and Cresent belong to one camp - that things you do on the internet are less serious than in real life.
I believe differently. |

They kind of are less serious.
But I am not trolling, I just believe Fox to be a smarmy hypocrite and condescender as is clearly evident in his posts towards me. A skilled reader will note clearly who began with the abuse and the condescension. I called out TUM on the same thing in another thread.
These guys to me are slightly less obnoxious than garden variety trolls in that they are not obviously offensive and their sligfhts are covered up by language, but they will never conceed an argument no matter how laboured it gets and they have no manners in their correspondence and ultimately slip into rudeness and the old 'I'm sick of banging my head against the wall of your stupidity, if you can't get it that my viewpoint is LAW, then I have nothing more to say to you' chestnut.
Purile, childish and the kind of thing at home on a Bill O 'Reilly episode.
Serious intent enough for you Captain? |

I can't say I agree here. People aren't rude because people are posting on topics that have already been covered elsewhere, they're rude because they're anonymous |
I'm a nice guy, but if people insist on posting threads like "Can I use my cell phone in Korea?", I'm gonna be short with them. |

It's a reasonably valid question though. I had friends who came over in the late 90s convinced that they wouldnt' be able to get toilet paper- that's worthy of scorn. |

Hee hee. I honestly bet you find it hard to make new friends. |
It's not a big problem. People are a lot less likely to say totally idiotic things in person, and a lot more likely to (at least outwardly) just accept they're wrong when they do get called out on having said something stupid. |
No, that's not how the social world works Fox and you know it. You go round 'calling people out' and telling them 'how it is' and they'll be like
"Man Fox is an annoying __________. Zero manners and a know it all."
I know it, you know it, everyone knows it. |
LDJS, I've probably debated Fox on more topics than anyone else on this board over the last year and he has never done anything juvenile or rude. Always he will take your post seriously, look at what you've written and write an honest response to it. Most importantly they always stuck to the issue. Who Fox or I was was irrelevant to the debate at hand. The issue and the moral/legal/philosophical implications were always the focus.
Sometimes there are eye-rollers, but in any debate that goes for 5+ pages someone, especially oneself, is going to throw out an eye roller.
In reference to the smoking thread, which is where you draw your ire, you'll notice that we went back on forth, definitely put some emotion in it, but were never insulting or spiteful. Always at the core of the posts was the issue.
Even though you were on 'my side' in the debate your posts were clearly insulting, juvenile, and way too personal. Now you have come on this thread and directly attacked another poster, in my mind without cause. Please be civil in these discussions.

Normally TUM, PGHB, and the Captain and I make up the apologista wing of this board, but on the smoking thread I was clearly in a different camp than the Captain and TUM, and guess what? We kept it civil and debated the issue.
There are plenty of posters on here who like to argue, count me in as one of them, but many of them keep it civil. Some get a bad rap that I think is undeserved. Contrary to the few Drive Buy Posters who throw out some post that gets everyone riled up, most of the multi-page debaters keep it civil and bring something to the table.
Two recent threads which come to mind that really had some good debate that was nearly wrecked by personals but which have featured some really good insight are the "On Monarchy" thread and the "Classical Music Tonality" Thread. When I think of Dave's, in spite of all the the general shenanigans (some of which are amusing), I choose to let threads such as those shape my view of the community on this board. |

This probably wont be accepted - but, we are from different countries.
What an Australian finds rude is not the same as what an englishman finds rude.
What an English man finds rude is not the same as what a canadian finds rude.
Or it is the opposite. I understand that many of you have never lived in another country other than your own. You say things that are acceptable in your own country and it sounds rude or insulting to others at times.
English and TV doesn't make us all understanding of each other. When I was younger, if I had a dollar for everytime I saw a crocodile dundee reference on tv or heard someone from overseas mention that I dont sound like him, I also would be facing the same tax issues as he (the actor) is.
Sometimes, we take an issue as rudeness when it is more just a difference of opinion based on thier culture. Its not always the same understanding of what is rudeness.
Though do people troll on this site? Of course, would they troll if it meant a knee capping? not likely.
Though I have been accused of trolling when I was just stating my opinion. I am not a pc person, its just my way. This is sometimes seen as being rude or insulting. |

Its a bit of a shame that people think the anonymity of the internet gives them a free licence to be rude, arrogant, condescending, and aggressive. Its quite notable on this site in particular, a condescending tone is pretty much the norm. But it's no where near as bad as on youtube in terms of aggression/ racism etc.
It doesn't offend me in a personal way, (someone being rude to me would never actually ruin my day or anything) but it does seem strange.
I think people should try and speak decently to others regardless of whether they know them or not |
obviously, it does. check yourself before you disrespect yourself. |

pkangs example is perfect. Plenty of threads on the topic, and a pretty vague question.
peppermint, I have a brother who spent some time in India a few years back. Toilet paper was usually always available, but it wasn't necessarily used by everyone, even in this day and age. So it's not entirely outside of the ballpark (as a foul, that is).
Has anyone ever thought about just ignoring the people that post inane and spiteful comments? As the chancellor in Star Trek VI says, "just because we can do that thing, doesn't mean we must do that thing." (just had to use the trek reference) |

You mean you tried. And when I demolished your arguments you were the one who began with the snarky comments. Remember? You made the comment about going to Saudi Arabia and I made a comment to the effect that Saudi has rather Draconian laws regarding alcohol. Up to that point it had been fairly civil. You responded calling me a "self-supposed genius" or some such schoolboy taunt. Then I took the gloves off.
Perhaps before calling other people hypocrites it might be a good idea to check yourself first to ensure the same charge can't be leveled against you. |
