Those 'milions' must be having a rough time living here, seeing the loutness and debauchery that is so visible here.
Do they lecture drunks passed out on the sidewalk as well? The foreigner is an easy target for the Korean keyboard warriors.

The problem is not that he was there drunk, but that he didn't use the opportunity to ad lib and make it funny. Like "Last night I was drunk. How many bottles can you drink?"
I tell you, conversation prompts like that fill seats in adult classes and I see no reason for that to work on the radio as well. |
This.
If someone shows up on a late night talk show obviously sauced but makes a bunch of jokes that get people howling in laughter no one cares. If that same person gets violent, drowsy-stumbling, or otherwise makes a fool out of themselves then its an issue.
I love how people assume that a few offended netizens represent the opinion of the Korean public as a whole.
Many Koreans are Conservative Christians who don't drink. If they ridicule the guy, they may be uptight judgmental bores, but they aren't being hypocrites like is being suggested.
I love how posters on Dave's always refer to 'drunken ajosshi culture' as being Korean culture, ignoring the millions of Conservative Christian folk here who have completely different views on drinking, smoking, prostitutes, spousal abuse, racism, and other things. |
|
They try to get you to go to church, give you a guilt trip if you are caught drinking, and call you incessantly if you miss service once.
Of course since I'm trying to get off the drink this is all welcome right now. During my wilder times it was a PAIN.
But New Creations and all that...keep me on the straight and narrow... |

| Its not a generalization to state that Korea has serious issues with alcohol- not just actual consumption but the attitudes towards alcohol consumption as well. |
Exactly. Many, many studies show that Koreans are amongst the heaviest drinkers in the world. So to generalise about the whole society (or rather as is the case here - to make conclusions based on statistics garnered from the behaviours of said whole society - is completely supportable.
Why this needs explaining; I have no idea. |
It needs explaining because the facts don't back you up. Korea isn't even in the top 15 of the heaviest drinkers in the world.
http://www.forbes.com/2007/11/27/drinking-europe-alcohol-biz-commerce-cx_tvr_1128drinking.html
Would you like to produce these many many studies you claim to have seen so we can all compare? |
From the WHO - please see page 53 (page number of actual page, not pdf browser)
Korea = 4th largest per capita consumer of alcohol in the World.
There are facts and then there's what TUM writes.
Which do I trust?
Meh.... I'll go with those facts! |
Except what I have written here is backed up by a link...FACT
What YOU have written is not. FACT
Besides which ONE study does not equate to the "many, many studies" you claimed to have read.
But alright go along with your NON-sourced, non-linked facts.
I'll go with my sourced and linked ones.
Seriously do you just enjoy embarrassing yourself?
EDIT: Weirdly enough when I checked it says they are the 4th largest consumer of STRONG LIQUOR and the 16th largest per capita among the OCED (not the 4th in the world as you claim)
But perhaps you are referencing a different study so post the link and we can see. |

Okay I checked it out. But it doesn't bear out your statement that Korea is the fourth highest consumer of alcohol. In fact the page you told me to look at says NOTHING about that.
But let's look at some tables.
Table 3 Total recorded alcohol per capita consumption (15+) in liters of pure alcohol
The ROK stands at 7.71. But 47 countries place ahead of it in alcohol consumption including Canada at 8.26, the USA at 8.51, Italy at 9.14, Australia at 9.19, the U.K at 10.39, Denmark at 11.93 and Germany clocks in at a whopping 12.89. All of the above are fairly prosperous Western democracies and all of the above have a higher alcohol consumption than the ROK
Table 4 Top 20 countries with highest beverage-specific adult per capita consumption
For Beer South Korea doesn't make the top 20.
For Wine South Korea just manages to slip into spot 20.
For Spirits South Korea doesn't make the list.
And here's the link for anybody who wants to check out the tables above.
http://www.who.int/substance_abuse/publications/global_status_report_2004_overview.pdf
You can find Table 3 on pages 11- 12 of the pdf and table 4 on page 13 |
