There is no digit off the amount is given in won and dollars, he was a famous tutor in gangnam, charged a little under 1 million per month per student. He would have had around 150 students.
apparently he had a couple of people working with him. |
At my peak I had 175 private tutoring students over the course of a year. I could tell you there is just no way you can keep track of everybody and the students are likely better off finding someone else to pay more attention to them. Especially not for the highly competitive education market in Korea. The only reason I had so many students was due to specialized expertise, which meant that they needed to come to me in particular.
Plus, thinking that you can have 150 students and not have someone blowing the whistle is wishful thinking to say the least.
The last time a group got caught, they were making $500K per year split out between 5 teachers. No way one guy is doing $1.3 million per year. I charge $200 per hour, work seven days a week, and have a support staff and I don't make half of that. |
How the hell did you get 150 students? Specialized or not
And i assume you mean 200 per hour as in teaching several students at a time right? |

| The guy wasn't teaching illegal privates. He was running an illegal hagwon. I wonder if they're using the "unlicensed tutor" thing to try and get more money off him. |

That's legal rates for study rooms, not for hagwons, gyoseups or anything else. |

This is where my libertarian fantasies start to kick in...I really despise the fact that my contract forbids privates and that there is no way around this aside from going the independent route.
Oh well, motivation to save up the money and operate a business.
One thing I wish is that there was some reform to allow teachers to teach privates at the overtime rate and report their income and have it be all good. I sure wouldn't mind spending 3-4 hours a day. a few days a week at 20,000/hr just to add a bit more. Being allowed to work only 8 hours a day kinda sucks. |

The newspaper article probably mistakenly states his yearly income as his monthly income.
If tutors make more than $1 million USD per year (putting them in the top 1-5% of Korean earners), then why doesn't every University Professor with a PHD or MBA just quit their university job and start private tutoring? Professors certainly aren't making that much.
Nearly every wage/salary claim you hear from a Korean is false. Newspapers and programs also exaggerate salaries to make their stories more interesting. |

What an idiot. If he could get that kind of cash (if that is even possible) why not do it legally and keep that gravy train running forever?

From what I understand the fees were higher than the limit a legal tutor is allowed to charge?
Probably why he wasn't legit. |

I believe that he is referring to his non-teaching business back in the US. I think that he is a lawyer. |

If he had other teachers working for him it sounds more like he runs a hogwon, than working as a teacher. I don't trust these numbers; it's just like when they say foreign teachers are averaging 5 Mil a month. It's just made up.
I don't trust what most teachers tell me they're making either:) |
Haha, you just keep going on believing that. They say ignorance is bliss.
So, you should be quite happy.
Dude, an F2 picking up 3.2M for an afternoon after school program and
then doing just two private classes for 50K/hour after that is already at
5.2M. If they want to do more and work on weekends, over 6M or 7M is
quite easy. Do you understand? EASY |
I don't live in Seoul, but the after school programs in my city pay 2.2 and they sponsor and hire E2's. I know F visas making over 5 Mil but they're working their asses off teaching 12 hour days. I know that you can make good money teaching corporates but it's not easy to find them. The guys I know making good money are never around; yet they'll be some guy at the bar talking big that doesn't seem too bright or too busy. |
Any dude who is at the bar saying he makes mote coin than others don't make shit....I work til I drip doing my uni job, three hogwons, and 15 privates....10 mil...but I am half dead most of the time. The last place you will see me woud be at a bar bragging...I am a saving machine...at the end of every day I have at least worked 10 hours, including the weekends...
Screw the bar....I am going to the bank! |

I think when the bars get going the banks are closed anyway. So I really
don't see your point.
UNI, I understand. Privates, OK. Why do you work at 3 hagwons?
If I worked one more hour a day and 5 hours on Saturday I would be at
7.2M. So You really must be working! How long do you think you can keep
that up for? I've known many people here and not one has maintained
that kind of schedule for long. |

Well I could be off here, things are changing fast in the E-2 crowd. However in the past you ccould work as much as you wanted on the E-2.
You just needed permission from your sponsor.
In the past I had a great boss and worked some privates, through the school, for good money. They found students and took a percentage of tuition, call it a recruiting - leagalizing fee.
It worked so well after a time I had keys to the building to use as I saw fit.
The public school system forbids any teacher from extra teaching outside fo school functions, so thats for everybody, not just the E-2 crowd. |

1. Word of mouth does it for me. Students come seek me out and every year I turn away quite a few because I can't juggle that many.
2. I do almost exclusively one-on-one teaching. Heck, even siblings insist on being taught separately. |

He was probably running small groups. It multiplies the hours and time quite effectively.
he also had helpers as pointed out. Groups and helpers reduces that 150 to significantly less hours.
he was probably still working like crazy though. |
While I'd concede it's theoretically possible to earn that much, I still think it's extremely unlikely. Trying to teach 150 students per month and coordinating/maximizing their study programs would be virtually impossible. Not to the extent that said students could not find a more attentive instructor at a lessor cost.
Also, if they are that popular and are willing to work that hard, they should just go legit and advertise out in the open. There's a lot more to be made that way IMHO; not to mention no jail time. |

I can keep it up because I have a beautiful son...thats all the motivation I need. I work because the work is always throwing itself in my lap. Now thats because I do my job well, dont have conplaints, and am pretty "koreanized" (if thats the word to describe it). I have maintained the schedule for over two years now, and it gets easier and easier. But I will be the first to admit, this life aint for everyone!!! You have to take care of yourself and make sure that you have a purpose, and yes money seems to be the purpose, but with my son, I am thinking about his future.
I am happy to work this much because when I get older, I aint doin' it like this....I am going to do this for about 5 more years, then take a short breather....
All the motivation I need is my son's bright and shiny face......that makes me go and go and go and go....
but thats me.... |
