| For the size of the city, Taipei beats the hell out of Seoul in terms of clubbing. |
I'm heading to Taipei in December. Can you guys gave me some names of clubs? Thanks! |
Spark, in the basement of 101, has the reputation of being the most happening place in the city at the moment, but I found it a bit unimpressive.
If you're going to be there on New Year's I highly recommend finding a party on the roof of the mall across from 101. I was there last year and was really close to 101, probably the best New Year's I've ever had. Tickets were $40 or so, including a couple free drinks. The one I went to was in a garden cafe in one of the Shinsegae buildings, you can probably find the info online. |
Room 18 and Luxy are ok and Spark is new as well as one I never went to Club Asia. Though they are stuck up around that time full of American/Taiwanese.......If you want to experience the youth letting their hair down go to 9%...Someone please tell me 9% is still there if it isnt I will never go back to Taiwan! once you get sick of the stylish clubs at 101 head to the Uni Clubs as they are much easier to act wild and be urself! |

too many try hards and wannabies in Korea
and whats with the discrimination on the doors?
Iv'e seen some clubs advertise with posters NO ENTRY to people over 32
or 35.
I've had friends ID checked at doors because they look to old!
WTF. since when does MONEY have an age?
I mean come on. 35 or 36 is to old to go out and enjoy yourself in a club,
I remember Hongdae back in 2002 they weren't letting foreigners into certain clubs, or they would make us pay double the door charge,
then the stupid owners realized ohhh a actually teachers and GI make money and they spend it. they spend a lot. then its free for foreigners now, because they know we spend more than Koreans.
this country has way to much racism and discrimination and frankly it's starting to really do my head in, I mean they get away with what ever they want. |

I agree with that. No uproar to change perceptions and stereotypes. What do they teach in schools ?

And in North America, yeah you'll see cultures mix a lot, but that's just because of necessity and not want. In reality the majority of minorities prefer the company of their own for various reasons. I don't know about Canada but in the US everything is still very much segregated. And in terms of being a minority in the States, I will NEVER be seen as an equal in the US to the majority, although it doesn't really matter to me.

Sad.
If this is true, America sucks balls Canada (Toronto) ain't like that at all. Move up North |

I just realised I missed Francois K last week, I'm gutted, I've always wanted to see him spin. Did anyone go? If you did, please tell me it was crap.
What's the best way to find out who's touring? I don't want to miss out on something like this again. |

This is pretty much the most comprehensive clubbing site in Korea. Most, if not all major events are advertised on here. |

Afraid to say it most certainly was not, it rocked.
My clubbing days are pretty much behind me so was a bit tentative bout going also having not been to a club here before didnt know what to expect but had to catch the big man for old time sakes. Was expecting a lame korean version of a big club experience but was very impressed with Eden, amazing sound, great lazers/lights and an up for it crowd - to get a 'dry' club rocking like that you know the whole show has got be spot on and it was. |

Yeah, they seem to be leading the pack among the "superclubs" in Seoul. Great staff, consistently packed, great sound, and they bring in some great talent that veers a bit off from the mainstream sound. |

These are the big 5's websites. A lot of them are really poorly maintained and don't keep things up to date at all, often posting info only after the event.
Seoul has hit a kind of critical mass for these large clubs. The foundation for a solid nightlife culture hasn't really set yet, and the results of these large venues are pretty much former partners trying to outdo each other.
I would expect at least one of these to fall hard in the next year or so. Answer and Volume have both, despite being opened within the past 3-4 years have inexplicably gutted and renovated successful venues. Answer I get...they were the first big boy on the block and have since been outdone many times over, but Volume was ranked as a top 30 club GLOBALLY by DJ Mag just last year.
I don't know...just kind of shows me that despite having huge market potential, amazing venues, great technology and talent on the decks, a lot of the club owners don't have a clue on how to run their businesses. |

you're a wealth of info. i wish i had run into you on here back in 2007 when I first came to Seoul and was looking for clubbing buddies. i came up dry. since, I kinda gave up on the clubbing scene, but would love to get out and "re-explore" the scene and the clubs. i still regularly listen to house/prog/trance/techhouse and mod a EDM forum, which means i need to get out. Think I might do that in a few weeks with a visit to Vera in Hongdae. Been to M2, B1 and a few other "holes" but not even to the big clubs yet. Like I said, time to explore again.
I ran across partyluv website a few years back, and it contained a TON of info - long before the info started making it's way onto Facebook in Seoul.
I'll check out the sites you posted above and throughout the thread agn. Thx. |

Things have really picked up since then. Answer and Circle were pretty much the only gigs in town back in '07, but things have rapidly progressed.
Vera is a great space. It has a bit of an underground feel to it, but is spacious enough to hold mid-size events, including awesome showcases for local talent. East Collective, Korea's biggest chance for breaking the int'l EDM scene wide open play there pretty often, alongside their female counter parts, Triple House. |

What's the majority now? Mexican? It's not like whites are an overwhelming majority like in Asian countries. |

Therefore the problem with Korean nightlife is the Koreans themselves. Foreigners are more open to meeting new people. Koreans like to be with the same people they're with every other week.
-------
t's weird, since getting back home, I've seen Koreans go to EDM clubs in the states... and they still just hang out in their little group, never socialize with anyone else, never dance with anyone else, just each other. It's very... Korean. |
And here's where I disagree. Of the Koreans I know, there isn't a single one I haven't seen an example of them being more social than myself. Going up to new people in bars and clubs and talking to them. They are perhaps shy in the process but they still do it. And I've had many, many Koreans, maybe in the hundreds now, come up to me and start talking.
And for the second quote - Koreans in the states only hanging around with other Koreans isnt remotely a Korean thing. In England, You will see chinese in vast numbers, creating their own little china towns. Black people from all over forming their own little communities. Not because they're all from Nigeria, but because they all have similar skin colour (I'm not assuming here - I lived with two black girls who talked about it with me).
Birds of a feather flock together, in the case of Koreans as foreigners.
I might just spend my whole time on Dave's correcting Korean stereotypes based on my experiences. |
I think what you're really trying to see is that some Black people bond with each other on the basis of racial oppression. Recall that "Black" is a skin color label, not culture, nationality, language, personality, ethnicity, etc. It's quite different from people of a homogenous culture bonding with each other on the basis of their common culture.
Furthermore, the implications of your comment "they all have similar skin color" is part of the reason "they" may be forced to talk to each other although many of "them" may have nothing in common.
Glad the two "Black girls" you lived with taught you so much about Black people. |
