I love facebook. I rarely use it, but understand how powerful of a tool it is. By far, the easiest method of staying connected with people and keeping relevant in lives you want to remain relevant in. I also enjoy the occasional, "WHOA!" moments like when a friend from way back when became a bodybuilder or another friend whose the frontman for a sweet metal band called Nekrogoblikon.
Anyway, like many have said, it's easiest to just edit your newsfeed or leave FB altogether.
I understand you're ranting, though... so hope you feel better. |

I like to post about what I'm eating or drinking or when I'm feeling hungry and it's a whole hour until lunch.
I also like to post pictures of cute cats I come across and my daily word count for NaNoWriMo. Figure those who don't like it can remove me or block me. I also like to spy on people from HS and then talk to my sister (who was in the same grade as me) about how fat/motherly they look. Cha-ching! |

Honestly, just delete them as your friends or block them from your newsfeed. If you can't stand what they're saying, they're probably not worth having as friends.
I deleted multiple co-workers because they kept posting statuses with intimate details of their problematic marriages and child-rearing that I found extremely repulsive and disrespectful to their families.
I love Facebook, but I can't stand the fact that it's becoming more and more difficult to keep information private. I've got my security at a max, and only my direct friends can see anything I do, and it's still not good enough.
Oh well, sucking it up for the benefits. |

I don't mind there are a bunch of losers on facebook, because lots of really cool people are also using facebook...
I am not saying I have the most awesome facebook page in the world, but my friends are artists, musicians, singers, photographers, scientists, writers......they make my real life a lot more meaningful and interesting.
If most of your friends are annoying and boring, mostly posting drunk photos from some night life.....maybe its time to check your own life. |

It's only public if your privacy settings are wide open, and employers can only see your page if you give them access. Why would anyone be dumb enough to do that? |

Yes most stuff pasted on Facebook is crap. On the other hand it supports all levels of friendship and I can see how people are getting on without necessarily having to contact them. There's also some guilty satisfaction in seeing how dreary and depressing the lives of some of the people from school have become.
I second the point someone made that alot of people from school never seem to change or have in fact maybe regressed. Again, depending on the person I feel depressed/pleasure in varying amounts. |

It is a bit weird though. Staying in touch with so many people who you would have naturally lost touch with pre-internet.......
......I wonder what impact, if any, it will have in a society sense. |

Not a whole lot I bet. I'm about as in touch with those people I would have lost touch with as I am in touch with my toothbrush. |

the impact is this, you go out with a group of friends, and you run into some more people who are acquaintances. some of these acquaintances are your facebook friends, and you've already stalked their page.
but since it's your first time hanging out, you have to pretend you know nothing about them as to appear not creepy. that's how it's affected society. we know too much superficial information about people we don't care about. |
