The pep rally I did we got split into teams and had to make a team cheer. Then we had to answer questions, do charades, have a dance contest, etc...Yes, not exactly the most awesomemly fun event in the history of mankind. But if you have a little competitive spirit in you and don't mind joking around for an hour, it can be fun and a cool way to meet people.

Others will surely disagree.

ffs.
I'm already going to this with less than 3 weeks of actual teaching left.
What's the "mandatory fun time" in the evening like for this one?

Sounds like you're going to the advanced workshop training for teachers who have been with GEPIK for over a year. I have no idea what goes on there.

And that sucks that you have to go with a month left on your contract. I was told that the Board of Education here requires all NETs to receive a certain number of hours of training every year. They are probably just making you go so they stay in compliance. Would have been better to have you do it a few months ago obviously.

Sigh. I remember the first GEPIK orientation began with some mean lady telling us how many million billion won gets spent just on buying insurance for us. Like we owe GEPIK our lives?

It was nice to be away from the school for a couple of days. I'm glad that it's only one overnight this year (for me, at least). I would love it if the conference were in Ilsan, and we had the option to go home for the night. I guess that wouldn't be fair to teachers who lived far from Ilsan, though.

I just accepted a GEPIK position that begins ASAP, hopefully by the end of this month. My recruiter said I wouldn't have any training, that I would just be getting orientated by my co-teacher. Weird? Or are the trainings a waste of time anyways?

You will absolutely have training. Many hagwons require you to take training that is unpaid or they pay you a measly 30,000W a day or something ridiculous. GEPIK training is paid at the same rate as your salary. Maybe that is what he meant. All GEPIK teachers must do training. A certain number of hours is required every year.

Don't sweat it. You'll get a little bit out of it if is scheduled within the first 3 months of you working. Some schools wait until your contract is almost up to send you, which is ridiculous. You'll also get to meet a lot of cool people hopefully.

They don't WAIT to send you, it's that the POE only schedules them once or twice a year. You just (luckily) missed this one, so you won't have to waste your time for quite a while. Lucky you.

I might be wrong, but I think they are trying to do them twice a year around the big hiring seasons. If she gets here in the end of December or beginning of January, she should make it to the March/April training.

There are actually four scheduled Orientations each year.
