| am i screwed? i always thought i was good to go since i work overseas and make less than 85,000. but it's come to my attention that i still need to file for some special form that says i work overseas. (i'm an american btw) anyone went through something similar? |
You need to file. You almost certainly owe nothing, so there will be no penalties. But you must file anyway. |
If they catch that you have not been filing, even though you did not make enough to pay tax, then they will make you pay the tax on what you made in Korea as if you had made it in the USA. H & R Block has that ad in the Korean English papers all the time. You are OK as long as you make the first move. Even if you have not filed for years you are Ok if you file now fo those years. If they make the first move, you have to pay what you would have payed on the money made in Korea as if you had earned it in the US. Could wipe you out. |
I didn't know that. To the OP, the numerous posts that say you should file anyway are correct. If all your income was made overseas and if that income is below 86k and if you had no IRS issues prior to coming here then there is little or no chance the IRS will take any action.
The fact is they have no idea you made any money. There are exceptions. The IRS has millions of tax forms, etc. to fill out. They have a computer program that audits or checks certain filers. If you were making a lot of money (and a lot is relative to what the IRS thinks that is) and you were paying a fair amount of tax and all of a sudden that is no longer the case, it could trigger some sort of IRS action or at least have someone who is breathing look closer at your profile.
They may assume something is amiss to see a high earning, high tax paying person go from that to zero.
Be that as it may, it is the law that everyone must file each year even if you owe nothing. The government is nosy and wants to make sure they know what you're doing.
Bottom line is file. The risk may not be great but its not worth it. The IRS are a gestapo bunch, its easy to file the taxes and be done with it. You'll sleep better knowing there are no surprises from that bunch. |
