They all laughed when I said that I wanted to be a stand-up comic; well, they're not laughing now!

Like a noreabang, do it once, do it right and retire.

Having done stand up, it's actually easier than it looks. And I'm the type that can't say 4 words at a business meeting without turning red and being very nervous. But it's not so terrible when you realize that, in general, people who go to see comedy really, really want to laugh.

As teachers we have the built in advantage that we're generally more experienced with a crowd, even a hostile crowd. And I actually did stand up to prep myself for teaching. Jumping in with both feet.

Half the trick is figuring out what the crowd wants to laugh at. I used to kill at one club filled with drunk dot.com and semi intelligent book types. At another club full of blue collar auto workers and hairdressers, all they wanted to hear was d_ick and lesbo jokes. "So I'm eatin' out this stinky p_ussy" God. They want to laugh at hork like that.

As long as you have good material that matches the general temper of the crowd, you fortify yourself with a couple drink, and the audience has had a few, it's not too bad. Cause when your name is called "And next up is a very funny gal/guy..." you go and there's no backing out. You're on. Just know your material and lead with a funny joke. As the laughs match what you assume people will laugh at your confidence builds.
