I use a program called Skype. www.skype.com
All you need is a microphone and speakers and you can talk to anyone for free. It's easy and the quality is actually really good. It's a lot better than using a pay phone with calling card on. Of course the other person needs the internet, headset or mic. I've saved a lot of money using it over calling cards. You have up to 5 people talking at one time too.

We've used an Internet phone deal www.net2phone.com for over five years now and it has been tried and tested. Even on a modem connection, despite a couple of seconds delay, it was good. Now, on cable, it is a near perfect connection every time. You can make PC to phone calls anywhere. Prices vary depending on the country you are calling but to the UK and US they are cheap cheap cheap.

NetMeeting is good but you must have some techno savvy if you want to share pics and vids as you have to initialize shared desktops and let them browse your computer with you. Done this once with someone who was also technically proficient and it wasn't entirely easy. With gran I just wouldn't bother. I just print off and send her the best of our digital photos every now and then and make up a video cassette for her. She likes having something physical.

Blogs are good but they are pull technology i.e. people have to come adn read them. A lot in the UK are still on modems i.e. pay per minute so blogs are less attractive for them esp ones with pics in them. Email is push technology and, if you use Outlook and set it to generate receipts you can actually find out who reads it and when.
