They need to stop sending foriengers' over to Korea. Korea has only gained this "international presence" because of ESL. If they had just soley Koreans', then they would have no economic diversity and therefore, no attraction from any country except themselves ( which is not much)

Maybe they wouldn't care, but it DOES look very very bad to the average
outsider looking in.

I'm always astounded at how kind people are when being screwed over. If you are working at a hogwan and they are providing an apartment for you and that is in the contract, not providing basic services (water, electricity, etc.) is a breach of contract. THEY are responsible for this. It is part of your salary package. Your boss would certainly NOT go wash at a public sauna for 3 or 4 or more days! If it was his apartment, you can be sure it would be fixed.

I agree with the earlier posters...if they are making no move to correct the problem after several days, simply sitting in the office at work and not teaching will remedy things VERY QUICKLY. Tell them you are happy to comply with the conditions of the contract when they are ready to do the same!

As an aside, Koreans are so incredibly proud of Korea and its rise in the world, blah, blah...mentioning that you are surprised that a modern country like Korea cannot fix these problems that are easily corrected in a place like China (which is so far below them, duh!)... Such a situation is a little embarrassing for Korea, etc... I told my family how great Korea is compared to other places in Asia, but now...

I also find these kinds of comments will also promote action.

yeah this is true - im not at a hagwon, but a public school, and ive just started (my 4th day today). further to this, its the school holidays, so theres no teaching to do as such, just optional extra classes which no kids turn up for, so all ive done since monday is it at my desk all day... going on strike wouldnt really change this.

I will however go and see my principal today for a talk in-person rather than using a third party (my head of departmet). i know the priniciapls english is limited, so i might take a co teacher with me to translate.

i didnt want to get off on the wrong foot, so im going to be as diplomatic as i can with it. really, 5 days without running water is taking the piss... its just a shame i cant threaten the landlord with with-holding rent (always worked a charm in uk) or reporting to them to the local council

From what I hear and see in the movies, people who don't stand up for themselves when they go to prison end up being other prisoners' personal slave.

Emancipate yourself to annoy the living crap out of the people who will get the job done. It will be a hell of a lot easier to fix the water problem than get another teacher.

By not communicating, you are giving the OK on everything. They won't think anything is the problem.

Well, small update - two plumbers just popped over (i say plumbers, men in coats carrying a massive spanner) and said they would be coming back at 7am to fix the water.

Hopefully itll get sorted. guess we'll see in t' morning

Although, i will admit my visit to the public baths this morning was awesome. Had a hot shower and a quick skinny dip in the hot pool. kinda liberating. plus, theres nothing quite like getting an eyeful of korean willy before work
