The poster/s who suggested that all the OP had to was politely decline when confronted with a truly rotten situation whereby they came to Korea expecting to teach English and were thrown into teaching maths, science and cooking, are talking absolute rubbish. . |
I still don't know any man that would bail on a signed contract after 1 day. Most would try to work it out.
1 day? Really?
OP sounds like a girl...grow a pair of nads! |

Question for the Op. How many cooking classes would you have been teaching? Korean or Western style food? Who would have been your students?
What Science subject would you have taught?
perhaps you are fleeing from something you did. One day?" Did you even teach a class? |

One could consider refusing to put up with an insane boss longer than one day as having testicular fortitude. Sometimes it can be quite obvious that a situation is rotten and will not improve. |

That's rubbish. Your employer and you both have a responsibility to honor the terms of the contract and within that general framework display a modicum of flexibility and understanding. Midnight runners who only look out for themselves deserve the hagwon hellholes to which they're so often relegated. May Immigration tighten the rules even further. |

Immigration might be on the lookout for you at the airport. You might have to run. That's why they call it the midnight run.
Good Luck |

| I've been working in Korea for awhile, but my first employer was terrible. I left after 3 days(easy back then, plus I didn't have a visa at that time). You can tell how much of a jerk a boss is after one day. You can get a feel for it. Life is too short to stay with such a moron and try to force it to work. Inevitably, you'll be the one that gets screwed because the system here is overwhelmingly rigged against you. The guy came to Korea, probably saw that he would be living in a dungeon for a year, maybe doing lots and lots of kindergarten, and then said "screw it." Perhaps if more schools considered the teacher that has to travel thousands of miles to get here, live within such an alien culture and work for employers who believe that they can pull anything with impunity, then maybe more teachers would be willing to give it a shot. I am sure that there are many midnight runs done everyday here in Korea and they will undoubtedly continue in the future. |

Um ok. That post just reiterates what I previously wrote. When things looked grim, I looked for another job. I know pulling a runner isn't the ideal answer but I think it was the best option for me. I can't imagine the he11 I would have had to endure had I given notice. |
But the third link he listed reveals that you were asking about obtaining a Japanese visa in Seoul before you'd even arrived in Korea. So essentially you're telling us that "things looked grim" before you even left your home country. |

Ha ha ha ha.... you're a criminal for quitting a crap job?? That's the dumbest thing that I have ever heard.
My advice is to post the name of the hagwon on as many Internet sites you can find so that it's impossible for the guy to hire any foreign teachers ever again. |

The odds of accurately making that determination are not very high after ONE DAY Cali...come on now. |

| Thus my use of the term sometimes. The odds may also increase in proportion to the level of insanity displayed by the boss. |

Wow! Sounds like someone got punched in the face by culture shock. From reading your posts it seems like you saw a tiny, maybe dirty, apartment, a hectic workplace, had a mild seizure, asked yourself "What am I doing?" and ran.
I don't want to kick you while you're down but damn, you could have at least gave it a couple of months. |
Give him a break. Dude if there was not even a honey moon period, you know you need to go. |

This is why the difference between a country with teacher unions and a country without them. Even Korean public school teachers are forced into duty days to babysit the school over their summer break which would NEVER happen in the US. |

| Yeah the hagwon owner is out the airfare. Thats the problem here. He got ripped off because a teacher got scared, and did not even try to work for him or with him. Criminal? maybe not, but very dishonorable and will cause problems for teachers who are working thee or who might work there. |
