Meaning it's absurd to assume that having a non-smoking bar is "politically correct b.s." When non-smokers complain about the stench of smoke on our clothes, and the toxic fumes invading our lungs every time we step in a bar smokers respond with the suggestion that we get a non-smoking bar to visit. We do just that and it's immediately denigrated as "politically correct bullshit."

| Don't go out to bars then - places where people go to do debacuhed stuff like get canned, smoke and flirt with the opposite gender etc. |

Flirting, having a few drinks, and ordering western food (something that is important in Itaewon) are non smokers' rights as well. The fact that non-smoking establishments are popping up is a good thing. You can go to your bars, and we can go to ours. If we want to go to yours, we deal with the smoke. If you want to go to ours, you smoke outside.
Easy, yes?
Not everyone goes to bars to get "canned" by the way. |

| If it makes me smoke less when I'm drinking then I'm all up for non-smoking bars. I only smoke when I drink, which is usually once a week, but I end up caning nearly a full pack in one night. What I need is someone with a cattle prod willing to zap me if I light up too often. |

I couldn't believe it. I walked into Nashville's on the weekend and there were 'No Smoking' signs all over the place, and all the ashtrays have been removed. I asked the bartender, almost in disbelief, "Is this now a non-smoking bar". And they confirmed that it was, 100%. Probably the first non-smoking bar in Seoul.
I have never smoked, and I always resent going back home after a night out stinking of second-hand smoke. If I pick up my clothes the next morning and smell them, I feel like I'm going to vomit. But on Saturday night I went home without the slightest scent of smoke on my clothes.
So kudos to the owner of Nashvilles. This is a brave move to make in Korea, and I hope he sticks with this new format.
Right on! |

Darn straight. Some of us go to bars to get pre-canned. At those bars I like it non-smoking. Usually I haven't cracked my first of the day. I'm talking like the bar in the hotel or a spot you hit at like 4:30-5:30- while waiting to meet everyone for dinner.
Then of course there is the transition bar (or two) from dinner to the real bar/the jazz bar. Maybe a place you have a beer/wine/cocktail until doors open at the jazz bar. Again, not getting canned and also I don't really like smoke there unless the songs have to do with smoking.
It's only at the bar after the jazz bar that I amd starting to think about getting plastered. But that's only at the wee hour of 11 so its time to pace yourself. Yes you are getting a bottle of liquor, but its not time to turn into a cowboy. Late night food is after that. Then you have either the Noraebang or a final bar. Now its 3 or 4 and you can either have your wind down drink where you are fairly sober and all the idiots have left and you can finally talk about work or love. Or you're stumbling down the street sharing a bottle of magkoeli with 5 other idiots.
So no, I do not always go to the bar to get canned. Come on, have some moderation in what you do. |

That sounds really boring and drawn out. But if that;s what you're into - fine.
Some of us prefer to cut the extensive foreplay and just go for a little warmer upper (some cheap drinks at a friend's house) around 8pm and then head to the bar around 10pm (jazz bars are cool too, used to like a bit of All that Jazz, nice margeritas) and go straight into the intercourse.
For me and my friends at least, drinking without smoking is as poor an experience as nachos without salsa; sex without kissing; or a roast dinner minus the gravy: utterly pointless and frustrating. |

lol
Apparently not smoking is as sinful as not drinking (which actually is a crime against nature).
I'm fine with bars choosing to not allow smoking. As long as they're given a choice and not forced to follow some ridiculous law. If places establish a no-smoking policy then it means non-smokers go there more and I don't have to feel quite so bad about lighting up when I'm having a few in smoker-friendly bars. |

| I went there with some friends a few weekends back because it was the only place we could find the Arsenal game...it was terrible. Terrible atmosphere and everyone there was over 40, including the foreigners. Don't go there. |

To each their own I guess. But what's with the ageism? We get enough of that here without Westerners adding to the pot. I personally think there's a great atmosphere - enhanced by the lack of second-hand smoke - and there's plenty of young eye candy on the weekends. But as I say, to each their own. I just think it's important that people know that there is a non-smoking option in Itaewon now. You don't have to go home stinking of second-hand smoke after a night out.
That's worth pointing out. |

| Yes! Thanks for posting those two bars - that really just made my day. Anyone interested in meeting up to check out either Nashville's or Tony's or both next weekend?? |
