If I take my first job without certificiation, the chances that I may actually land one of the following jobs...
Oh, you can score a job. But the provided housing/airfare reimbursement/pay isn't nearly as good as if you gain certification (online)

It's about the same in the Asian countries. You can score a decent job by looking hard. too many schools will not scrutinize you for it, and will offer you relatively the same pay/housing quality/benefits, etc.

Are you kidding? The pay is noticably better, you're offered what is essentially quality housing, even more paid time off, better work schedules, etc. You'd be dumb to consider trying to go over there without it

Definitely get certified before going. You're treated in a completely different class, and it makes your teaching job a lot easier. Plus, once you're done, it looks great being both previously ceritified and having the experience.

Just go without, and do certification while you teach. Once you're done, pay goes up. NBD.

Just wanted to pop in and say cheers RMNC for all of this information. I've spent ages trying to decide on what locations might suit me, and this is some good stuff.

Make friends with Koreans. What's the point of coming here and being friends with only foreigners? There are also a lot of Korean language programs you can join.

This might be the worst comment I've seen in a long time. Yeah, I might have sat around having fun with a table of folks who werent Korean but they were Irish, English, South African, Canadian, and American.
I had some korean friends but I got pretty tired of being used for my English. So yes, make friends with Koreans and try to learn the language and culture, but I dont think I 'wasted time' when I meet up with my buddies in Dublin, Toronto, or Cape Town when Im passing through and have some beers and a laugh about our times together.

I never said to make friends with only Koreans or only forgeiners. I said to make friends with Koreans and to NOT ONLY make friends with Forgeiners. Therefore achieving a nice well rounded blend. You have your English speaking/Western friends, to help maintain your identity, eat Western food with, empathize with, and who share similar interests, etc....Then you also have your Korean friends with, who will expose you to their language, culture and some places that you won't ever know about if you only hang out with other Westerners.

Furthermore, if your Korean "friends" are USING you for English. Well, they aren't really "friends" to begin with. So back to the OP, if you are still reading this thread, if someone (Korean or not) is using you for whatever reason. Don't be friends with them anymore.
