I just got to Seoul a couple of days ago and am staying with my aunt (i'm a halfie) on an F4 visa. Before I left I had scoured this website looking for jobs with the best vacation but had a hard time finding good ones in Seoul with decent areas (preferably gangnam, I know i'm getting picky). Any suggestions? I would like to find a job within the next 2 weeks or so if possible.

Also, do u get to choose your vacation times? Because that would be ideal. I have a friend's wedding I want to attend in the beginning of July. Or do most of the schools have a similar calendar that they use for vacation? Less working hours is a bonus too, i don't care if i get paid a tiny bit less.

I have absolutely no problem with this question. Some act as if they came to Korea to work hard. The person doesn't say they don't want to do a good job while they are at work but some assume that (which admittedly I can understand). The OPs request may not be realistic or doable but its something that is worthy of finding out if possible.

So the reason why most people apply only to public schools instead of a hogwon or apply to public schools only after even a good hogwon experience is for the chance to work harder? Bull effing shyt. Its the less teaching hours and more vacation. Same with those who go to uni jobs. There are a few exceptions but most will lie about their real reasons on here. Its what I did (looked for a job that had more vacation time and less hours) and could give a rats if someone who doesn't know me or how hard I work thinks I'm a slacker.

Guarantee you if the OP found this ideal job and you met them in a bar and they told you about it, the ones criticizing would be kissing a$$ to get in on such a good thing.

Not trying to do a good job while you're there is one thing. Trying to find a job that pays well for less hours and more vacation time isn't. Its smart if you can find it actually.

As to the OP's question, a good uni job is probably the best teaching job that fits that description IF you can get it.

yes, in hindsight I should have chosen a different title, but ive posted before with a couple of other questions and didn't get much response so I decided to go with something bolder since i need to find a job sooner rather than later.

okay, say i just go ahead with a job in a good location but only 2 weeks vacation (which i'm fine with, i just was worried about this wedding in thailand, july 3rd i believe) does anyone know if there is a set calendar school year like in the states?

im not gonna say that i'm upset that people jumped all over me about my posting (i wrote it in a frenzied state and apparently don't know the 'rules' here) but there are a lot of us newbies here that could use a little hand holding Smile

i've been on here a while, but just recently decided to take the plunge to come here. a lot of us could gain a lot from others' advice, especially if it's done in a warm inviting way. although i know that's not what korea is about, but hey that's why we're all on here right? b/c it allows us to connect. unless some of you are here just to show off all of your massive amounts of korean knowledge b/c this is the only place anyone would pay attention to you... one other thing i wanna say, although it doesnt really matter, is that i didn't come here to make a ton of money or pay off some student loans. i made plenty of money back at home, so here i'm actually taking a major paycut. i'm here to experience living in another culture, to get to know more about where my mother comes from, to learn korean better (can read/write and understand some, but my vocab is minimal) and to travel around korea.

so although it sounds like i'm some kind of lazy bum who doesn't want to work a lot, i'm here to do something that, in my opinion, is a little more important than just making money. but hey, what do i know? thanks for all of your helpful responses though. i truly do appreciate it, no matter what the tone it was delivered in.

Here's an idea of the vacation schedule with a major chain hagwon. Obviously, YMMV if you go with a small hagwon. Public schools are a completely different beast, and I have no idea about those.

(These days don't include the official Korea holidays, which you should have off anyway)

April 8
August 1-3 ("summer vacation")
September 9
November 11
December 26-30 (winter vacation)

Notice how the dates are all over the place, with the exception of the winter break. Again, you can find hagwons with schedules that are either better or worse. I seriously doubt you'll be able to get that week of in July with any of them though.

Well, daisy

if you can manage to wait it out (seeing as how you are so incredibly wealthy) and find a job here after your sister's wedding, that would be much better in the long run.

Starting a job and 3 months in taking unpaid leave (which is what it will be) isn't best.

Hope that helps

Back to answer the questions posed by the Original poster.

Early July is EXAM time and you are unlikely to get a break from anywhere if you are a teacher.

The vast majority of hagwans tend to have really short breaks and minimal vacation time broke up so that they don't have to close the school.

Public schools will typically break from about the 3rd week of July to the 3rd week of August.

Universities have longer vacations but I assumed that you do not have a related MA and/or experience so would therefore be unlikely to obtain a university post and definitely wouldn't get one this late and IN Seoul.

Again, as reiterated in my first post in your thread your best choice would be to take a position in some mom/pop hagwan and leave at the end of June (the day after payday is good).

Return to Korea at your convenience and start work in another hagwan.

You have never mentioned if you are actually qualified to work in a PS (or are interested) so I didn't get into that as an option.

Other options on an F4 would be to work in a non-teaching related field. Try EBS if you are younger and even a bit pretty.

In fairness to the OP, she does not mention this at all.

On officer's selection courses, laziness is thought of as an attribute. A lazy person tries to figure out a shortcut. Who wants somebody that bludgeons their way through every situation with blinkers on?

The OP said: Less working hours is a bonus too, i don't care if i get paid a tiny bit less.

Then the answer is simple.

Go freelance.

If you want freedom and earn what ever you decide is enough for you, that is the ticket.

With an F-4 that should not be a problem.

BTW if you are an F-4, check out AFEK.info, they might be more inclined to actually help you out.

All good reasons to come to Korea.

I hope you find what you seek and that you end up having a great experience in Korea.

A PS job would possibly be your best bet as a University job is out of range considering your qualifications. Nothing is stopping you from applying at Universities but the semester starts next week so your odds are low.

Same deal with PS as they start in March.

So you may have to take a Hakwon job.

Best of luck.

Not sure how wanting to work less hours translates into less quality or indicates less quality? If anything, less working hours can help ensure better quality and more energy into a job.

So, if you're a hard worker and you want less hours does that automatically mean you won't work as hard?

Funny thing is if ANY job back home offered a 30 hour work week instead of a 40 hour work week for the same pay people would be lining up for it and no one would think that anyone applying for such jobs are slackers or have a bad work ethic.

Bottom line is oftentimes Ive seen here in Korea that if you have a reputation for being a good teacher, you can find jobs easier and on occasion jobs find you because you're known as one. People who leave a good place want to be replaced with someone good and will ask around for the rep of a good teacher. Bad ones or those that seem like they are here only to get drunk and party get passed by even by their friends. Great to hang out with them but you wouldn't want them near your kids.

Being unemployed = vacation
