IMO the smaller towns in the north are really nice.......personally i like chiang mai but here are plenty of smaller towns with cheap prices and plenty of hospitality........
try palawan in the philippines, rural beaches in burma, beaches in sri lanka and lots of other places in asia if you are looking for beaches...... |

I really like Thailand. I actually really enjoyed Phuket, as commercial as it is. The beach was still nice, and it was kind of a fun and energetic place in general.
Koh Phagnan was pretty close to perfection, though. There weren't any annoying people hassling me... Just normal people. Ok, so the bungalow manager tried to get paid twice, but I just said, "I already paid you" and he was like "Oh yeah, ok."
Yes, the first time you travel somewhere with a lot of touts, it can be hard to deal with. My first tropical vacation was to Bali, and I got ripped off at the airport by anybody who could (arrival clerk, bag wrangler, currency exchange)... But, that's past me now. |

I liked Phuket too but I understand people's complaints about it. They're mostly true.

Just as you would be wise to research a school before accepting a position in Korea its equally wise to research a vacation spot before dropping hundreds of dollars or more likely at least a grand or more.
Thailand isn't for everyone. The OP hated but others swear by it. Same for living and working in Korea. Know what you want out of a vacation and do your research.
In this day and age of the internet its lazy nto to and you pretty much deserve what you get from a bad vacation if you don't. |

I've made many trips to Thailand; however, I can definitely understand why some people here feel the way they do about the people there and how they treat foreign visitors. Many see us as walking ATM machines, and if we do not buy the postcards or t-shirts in their shops we can GTFO.
For the younger backpackers Thailand is fine, I guess. But for the older more financially secure travelers who want to stay in a nice hotel and not get ripped off, there's always Tahiti or Hawaii. |

Ive been many times..but its not only thailand, LAOS, Vietnam, cambodia is all the same. thailand is commercial now.
everyman and his dog are there. it's not the lost oriental paradise.
its a place for locals to cash in on tourism by ripping off foreigners.
but thailand can be cheap if you live like a thai.
thailand over rated? I don't think so.. you get what you pay for.
I mean , what ever it is you want, thailand will have it.
people saying Foreigners get treated bad here in Korea or ripped off..
I don't agree it's as bad as south east asia.
the Koreans will try, but they wont beg like the SE Asians.
and you don't find touts at ever site seeing spot in Korea.
Korea is very calm compared to SE Asia.
Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Burma they will follow you all day waving something at you to buy, they follow you right back to your hotel!
its's crazy!
it actually takes away the joy from your trip it's so bad.
I have been visiting thailand for over 10 years very often. and I must say, I have seen major changes! Thais are more money hungry now.\
and the country is not cheap. rooms, drinks, food is on par with Korea. sometimes more expensive than Korea.
thats just crazy!
and for what????
it's time to move to South America for holidays I think. |
This song needs a chorus. |
