Does anybody here have any desires to start their own businesses? Or has anybody here started their own business?

Something that a lot of esl teachers I know have in common is a stubborn entrepreneurial streak that, try as they might, they just can't shake. It may have something to do with not wanting to work for a corporation or because a disproportionately high percentage of us have an adventurous/thrill-seeking side to us that makes us want to risk it all on something interesting. I've met a lotta former ESL-teacher-now-bar owners in Seoul...

I know you can't start a business on an E-2 visa, but I'm sure you can do something like start an online business that's incorporated in the states. (correct?) I know that people have and always will find ways around this.

I myself know I won't be teaching any more than 2-3 years. I also know that I won't be working a desk job in a corporation (nothing wrong with them, just not for me). Something I plan to do after teaching here is to go into business for myself.

Then you need to ask yourself, what kind of business do you want to set up? Do you have the requisite skills to be successful? How much start up capital do you need? Where is your market? How are you going to reach them? What are your cashflow projections? Where are you going to live and how are you going to pay for a roof over your head, food to eat, medical insurance, etc. whilst you wait for this thing to take off (if it does).

Sorry if this all seems negative, but I've met way too many pie in the sky TEFLers who seem to not quite be living in the real world.

You're a total buzzkill. Haha, I'm kidding, you're being realistic which is helpful. As for the pie-in-the-skyers, I imagine that has a lot to do with many of us being fresh out of college, and it's more of an age thing than a TEFL thing, though we TEFLers are an interesting bunch to study. I feel there's not a single "normal" person in the group Smile

Yeah, I want to start a business on a beach in south east asia. Just a low budget place with nice accomadation and decent meals.

It should take me 2 more years on my current budget, less If i'm lucky. Then again I may run into some work issues here and go back to my old govt job back home, either way, my time here's been worthwhile.
