It isn't just a small group that isn't in trouble. It's a large group that is, but it's hardly most Americans.

It comes from childhood abuse. You live on high polar extremes ( never in debt vs. always in debt; never having any money vs having a whole lot at once; never having an old car vs. having 3 or 4 new ones; and etc, etc).

umm

What do you mean? This is cyui's most coherent and sensical post ever. Whether it actually relates to this thread, who knows. But it could.

Her apartment sounds like a good deal. My studio in San Diego was $1025/month and itty bitty. Maybe this is good for NYC?

why doesn't she get a room mate? I can understand she wants a nice place, also it's not easy to find decent places in NYC..

she is caught up in that whole NYC lifestyle thing..

I grew up in Northern New Jersey when I was a kid and I laughed at the NYers for being anal. Very Happy

Why live in Gangnam when you can live 4 stops away? Hmmmmm.....frugality? Maybe its because I have the personal management merit badge....you save money for your future. I would much rather pay half the price and bank the rest for something I really want and need. But then again, here I am paying jeonse after 2 years.

Doesn't the entire country make fun of New Jersey?

Pretty much. Any state that supplies the cast for a show like "Jersey Shore" deserves no respect.

In all fairness, plenty of the cast came from "bridge and tunnel" parts of NYC as well. Still, it was held in Jersey Shore, because it's a mecca for that kind of person. There's bound to be spillage to its neighboring state Laughing

Yeah, only 1 of the jersey shore bunch of jerks are actually from NJ. But North Jersey and South Jersey are TOTALLY different places.

Back on topic...paying a lot for rent doesnt make sense sometimes. But I had some thoughts on this a while back...what are we saving for? How long ahead are we looking?

I could take a job, make 25K a year, and save 15k. No cable, shared apartment, cereal meals, no girlfriend etc....but how long do we want to live that like? At some point in all out lives we all make a choice when we want to start living and stop pretending to live. Saving frugally for an entire life to live easy in retirement doesnt make sense to me. I would argue not to make this choice too early (before kids), but its a matter to timing. Personally, living in Manhattan is great and most people think its worth the cost. Walking to tons of bars, restaurants, work, parks etc. makes living easy. Everyone knows its a rip off but tons of people do it.

I'm frugal...I have a girlfriend, I eat well, I drink on weekends, I go on trips, I just built a 1.4 million KRW computer....you want to know why? I don't spend money on stupid sh*t.

Right now I make 2.3 and I easily saved 15k my first year...but I earned a bit extra from some side jobs.

You got the frugal genes in the family, Triban. Someone could offer you a medal, or say, a belt for your achievements. I wouldn't because I figure you'd only beat your sister with it.

At least your sister has given you the opportunity to unfurl the sheer awesomeness of your personal record. Well done.

I doff my hat to you. Please, no need to toss coins in it.

I would spend money to buy a bamboo cane to beat beggars with, but it would be unfrugal when I can just kick them out of my way.

I might as well just use a metal pipe I find on the street. I would prefer you give me a golden microwave since that is the appliance I am missing and do not want to pay for one!

You may have a tenpenc.....십원. Good day sir, I SAID GOOD DAY!

Is that from Adam Carolla? I have to agree with you on the microwave... have refused to buy one although I need one... can't justify the price.
