I went to Pattaya for the beach and I really liked it. I liked the pure virgin white sand and the clear water. |
Have you ever been to another tropical beach? It's seriously the worst beach I've been to in Southeast Asia, and that includes the mega-disaster that is Kuta. If anyone tells me they enjoyed their time in Pattaya I'm going to assume they didn't leave their hotel room unless they were procuring local flavor. |
If you're looking for that immoral godless seediness you'll find it pretty much anywhere in the world. I myself saw no evidence of the existance of prostitution in Pattaya. I wasn't born yeaterday I have seen the sinful red light places in Amsterdam. If I go for a beach holiday. I go for the beach and nothing else. I was greatly impressed with the nicely cooked Lobster on Walking Street. Not to mention the nice plate of Bangers in Bangkok. I don't look for those immoral things therefore I don't find them enough said. |

I'd say the place I regret visiting the most is Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. The beaches sucked, the food was nothing like I expected (I'd heard that Malaysian food was reason enough to visit the country), the natives weren't friendly, prices were high for SE Asia, and well, I just never got the vibe I usually get when I'm in SE Asia.
I'd also say Taipei and Fukuoka were also places I don't care to visit again. They just seem like different versions of Seoul. |
Kota Kinabalu was the first place in South East Asia that I felt was off the 'backpacker's trail'. I agree the people weren't the most friendly--it was worse in Sandakan, believe it or not--but the islands just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu are fantastics. There were like 20 other people there besides me. The water was so clean there were tropical fish swimming 5 meters from shore.
I've been to most cities in SEA and I'd have to say Ho Chi Minh was my second least favorite. My least favorite is Manila, although I would like to check out Bohol one of these days.
Taipei--loved it! |

Taipei had nothing for me, just shops, bars and department stores. Plus the people weren't that friendly and even if they were, they didn't speak English and I didn't speak Chinese.
As for Kota, the island I went to was dirty and there were no facilities to speak of. I've also heard that Malaysia overall isn't that great compared to Thailand, the Phils, Bali and the like. |

Kind of agree about Taipei. Reminded me too much of Seoul. Boring and not touristic. Hell, at least you found the bars. The only thing I found were night markets - and they were indeed the highlight of my trip.
However, I generally found the people friendlier. Went for a hike at a nearby mountain and basically everyone I passed by greeted me.
Then I went to Kaohsiung and nearly died of heat...in late September. |

I hate to say this but as far as vacationing goes South Korea. The people tend to be anti-foreigner here. They brag about how nice a place it is to vacation at but truth be told It's an OK place to live and work. But when it comes to vacationing and trying to enjoy yourself here "nope". Not a good place to vacation. |

I'm moving from Taiwan in a couple of months and I have to agree that the cities (Taipei, Kaohsiung and others) don't offer a lot for tourism although there are some nice places on the outskirts. Taroko on the other hand is great and the mountains and the east coast (both hwy 9 and hwy 11) are overlooked. A lot of great places to go.
I'm in a mostly hate relationship with Manila. The slums/poverty/desperation are really depressing. OTOH you can spend a day getting fantastic bargains in the street markets. And the rest of the Philippines is awesome although the tourist infrastructure leaves a lot to be desired. |

I don't blame the Manila haters because that city has a lot of negatives working against it but it does have it charms like good malls, restaurants, hotspots and people. I do know of people who love Manila, and perhaps I'll get there one day.
I also recently visited Tokyo for the first time and while it's not the worst city I've visited in Asia, it's far from the best. The prices are WORSE than insane (sleeping in a sauna in Korea is like 8,000 won per night while a capsule hotel in Tokyo is more than 55,000 won); almost nothing in English and even fewer natives speak even basic English; having to show my passport JUST TO USE A PC at an Internet cafe; a subway system that does not allow transfers like in Seoul; and a host of other complaints. |

Yeah, Tokyo is a very unforgiving and complex place, you really need some time, some friends and a fair amount of money to figure it out. Once you do, you begin to see some good things emerge. But make no mistake, if your cash flow isn't there, extremely tough, 'tho not impossible. |

Pattaya was a cess pool of prostitutes, ladyboys, and crime. Would never go back. |
Alot of the men working in ESL here do so simply to finance their whoring in China, Thailand and the Philippines.

I second this. Overall Malaysian Borneo was a dissapointment and expensive. Of course, we did show up on the first day of Ramadan, which wasn't the best plan. The beaches in KK were revolting and full of trash, people stood around on the beach waiting for us to get out of the water so they could take pictures of the foreigners in bathing suits.
Sandakan looked like it had been bombed.
People generally unfriendly throughout.
We did dive Sipidan and Kabul while we were there and they were amazing. |

Goergetown, Malaysia is my least favorite place.
I have to say this too, the way that Malaysia and Singapore summarily hang drug mules is a flat out abomination. Those places should be avoided anyway. There is a Japanese Nurse now of all people that they are probably going to execute. Nothing more than a fool that was talked into and maybe pressured into transporting a suit case for a "good friend" or gangster. |

Is there something about being Japanese or a nurse that makes this person more deserving of sympathy than others in the same predicament?
I'm not actually in favour of the death penalty for anything in any country. But neither of these two nations make any secret whatsoever of their stance on the issue. Perhaps if it were someone of severely impaired mental capabilities who was tricked into doing this then it'd be different. I don't know much about this case and maybe there are some unusually extenuating circumstances. But in the absence of any of those, someone deemed fit to treat sick people in hospitals ought, one would expect, to have enough common sense to avoid something like this.
Japan itself isn't especially overtolerant on drug issues either. Plenty of foreign males entering Japan on their own have to bear the brunt of Japanese Customs' assumptions that they are inherently more likely to be in possession of drugs. |
