sorry for being a pig

Actually, in retrospect, if I'd considered how i would have felt having lost three times my current capacity in one go... I wouldn't have been flippant.

So, group hugs all round and thanks for being the first person I think I've ever openly had an apology from in a couple of thousand posts on Dave's...

... that came out of left field.

60 gigs back up....

seems all the stuff in folders in that drive were recoverable... everything not enclosed in a folder is lost..

i used 'getbackdata' + crack.. it seems to work well...

the active partition was a bit tricky for me.. well, maybe i am just lazy.. i could run the other from windows and it was much easier....

the rest won't be too difficult to recover from winmx anyways....

thanks for you efforts Very Happy

Programz

Scroll down for EasyRecovery Pro 6.03
It's the 10th offering on the left side.

Download it. Open the fosi.nfo file with notepad (or Wordpad) and read it.
Install the program and recover your data.

Use NTFS. The other fs is obselete years ago. Microsoft was the last one to upgrade their os to file system for the 21st Century. That was the news when MS started offering it.

I did the same thing last year and dele'd the wrong hdd. It took half a saturday but I figured out how to use this software and recovered all my data. I had formatted the drive.

The fosi site has been one of the most respected and trouble free for many years.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is also the best source for Window Washer, PowerDVD and SiSoft Sandra. SSSandra is an excellent pc diagnostic tool for people who really know computers.

Another good site for software is
Lunatic.org
Lots of dl's with pretty good descriptions of what it's for, especially for people who run servers and want some ideas of what's available. You have to check it regularly.

It may have offerings for recovering lost data too.

Programz changes offerings a couple of times a year maybe.

Will this work for XP? I was updating from Home to Pro and the sh*t hit the fan, blue screen of death and I did a recovery, but lost everything except what was factory installed. All pictures, music and movies...I'm hosed.

YES, you likely can recover them ... as long as you DO NOT continue to write to the drive by taking more pictures !!

An easy to use application focusing on this problem is Iolo Search and Recover

http://www.iolo.com/sr/index.cfm

Download it or let me know and I can "supply" it

Scarneck- Yes I used that software on xp but I just looked at Snafulufagus's link from the last post and it is offering much better options. I like being able to preview lost files and selecting what I want to recover. That would make the whole process faster and more efficient. Be patient Scarneck and you'll get the stuff back as long as you haven't written over the data.

Hopefully i'll never know if it's better than EasyRecovery. Laughing

Well, I think I'm hosed. Royally. I'm told that because I didn't try to correct the problem right from the 'blue screen of death' and I used the system restore/recovery I lost it for good. Aonther thing I was told is that I should make folders from the root directory instead off of the desktop; it'll be easier to recover if and when I screw it up again.

I believe that when the system did a recovery it may have wrote over the data...I mean who knows, I'm one of those 'Stupid Army Guys'...

Thanks for the advice...

The reason is that when the computer starts up it takes all the data on/in the desktop location and loads it into memory and keeps it there, thus taking up memory and slowing the computer ...

No.

Well you better get your MCSE books out and check how data is loaded.

Unfortunately, my MCSE books are home in Canada. Though I do suspect your intent was to suggest that I am ignorant of how computers operate and in fact did not own such books. But thanks to the POWER OF THE INTERNET, we can look up anything we need from here without having to go home to get them.

I spoke nearly accurately by saying ALL the data, well no that's not true. The data content as a volume is loaded with hooks to the content in memory ... that is one of the flaws with the active desktop scenario and thus the reason newer versions of Windows require more RAM as base requirements for use.

Items on the desktop consume no more memory and no more computer resources than if they were in any open window browsing the hard drive.

Plus the "active desktop" refers to allowing programs to access data both locally and from remote locations. Used in creating news feeds, weather reports, Google Taskbar, etc. Copying a file to the desktop was only a single part of the "active desktop".

Though by your theory, I've got a problem because I'm running with a gig of RAM and page-files turned off so if I need to use more than a gig of RAM such as a gig and a byte., I'm out of luck.

That's just one folder on my desktop along with a hundred other data files consuming another 10 gigs or so! I'm screwed now as I only have a gig of RAM! Well, I would be if you were correct.

Thanks for your detailed retort by the way Confused

Your original quoted statement was wrong on multiple accounts and was correct on absolutely nothing. You've taken a couple terms, did some guessing on what you thought they meant based on your anecdotal experiences, added some hearsay from people also didn't know what they were talking about and view their claims as facts, and now you are dishing out this invalid advice to others. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings in telling you everything you know is wrong. I'm not your mother who has to make you feel better and then hold your hand while I slowly and politely explain how things actually work.

Spoken like a gentleman.

Your pretty pictures and words seem to be all the proof that is needed.

You're the one saying that everything on the desktop is loaded into memory, and I'm saying I don't have 30GB of RAM which is what would be required to load everything that is currently on my desktop. A picture was the quickest way of showing what you were saying was wrong.

I continue to see why the forum is gaining one of the worst reputations around with users like this ....

Because I correct people when they make things up?

If you feel you are correct, you are welcome to start linking to technical sites that support your claims. I just posted a picture because you're a computer novice and it's easier to understand a picture which clearly shows what you said was a lie rather than linking to a technical site that you may not understand.

That isn't hot, hot J-Porn, but very boring text documents as the folder name quite clearly states. Talking about IP stacks, PHP scripting, how Active Desktops work, etc. If it was indeed hot, hot J-Porn, it would have been labelled as such.
