Some people should learn tolerance. Unless you are sitting for a long time in a small, unventilated room with a few people smoking then 'passive smoking' will do you no harm. You just don't like the smell of it. Deal with it.

I don't like the smell of Koreans who don't use deodourant, aftershave or perfume, but I put up with it

This. I gave up a long time ago but am constantly amazed by the levels of self-righteous intollerance to what is a very minor annoyance. Yes smoking inside can be a nuisance but is only even considered to be a possible cause for health problems if you work in a smoky atmosphere day in day out. Walking though a group of guys in a doorway for a total of two or three seconds a day is not going to make any difference at all. Car exhausts on the other hand are a proven threat. Kids living on main roads show a marked higher rate of asthma beyoind anything discovered from passive smoking surveys.

Thank you. I can't believe some posters don't see the constant and more dangerous harm being done by vehicle exhaust fumes. Comparing the tiny amount of atmospheric pollution done by cigarettes with the constant, pervasive and huge amount of vehicle exhaust pollution.....really...what are you smoking!! Laughing

Last year in Jongno-gu, they set up patrols to watch for people littering cigarette butts on the ground near the subway stations (despite the lack of ashtrays and trashcans). That lasted less than a week and the patrols are gone.

Motorcycles are still on the sidewalks.

Tow trucks still run red lights and middle lines.

The high suicide rates is not met with available mental health care services.

Cigarettes will rarely be enforced as long as other issues like Dokdo are still unresolved.

Every few months someone gets all excited, and posts about some wonderful new law in Korea. Some people just never learn. For those funsters out there with learning difficulties, let me summarize the situation in Korea:
1. Laws are rarely enforced, and if they are it is only for a very short time (Often coinciding with the visit of important foreign dignitaries).
2. The payment of fines is optional. You don't pay, don't think they'll bust your door down and take away your televisison.
3. Even if you are fined, every year the President pardons nearly everyone.
End of story.

No names but a guy on this thread quit before his daughter was born, and I followed suit a few months after leaving Korea. Best thing I ever did in my life, it's mostly mental anyway, and I am so happy I quit. Thanks E, you were an inspiration and a great role model. I went cold turkey over a year ago and never looked back or cheated once!

It's true that after you quit, smelling it does suck, but I don't ever disparage another smoker because I know how bad they probably hate smoking too. I know most smokers want to stop, they just are afraid to try.

I personally don't feel cars pollute my air like tobacco does. I don't sit right next to the exhaust pipe of a car.. who does!!! but standing anywhere near a smoker and you feel his smoke..
comparing cars to tobacco is stupid...

crazy talk....would you rather be in a room with a smoker or a running car? car fumes are way more lethal than cigarette smoke. How many cars in a metropolis like seoul? 6 million? every minute of every day u are breathing in the exhaust fumes of millions of cars. Doesnt matter where u are. It permeates the air of the whole city.

like I said, you don't park your nose next to a car exhaust pipe do you?
cars don't fire out smoke from the exhaust .. you stand next to a guy smoking a cigarette and then stand next to a car see what is worse.

Well considering no one has ever committed suicide by parking their car in the garage and leaving it running while they are inside whereas every year thousands of people end their lives by locking themselves in the garage with some stogies.....

This is why I don't like the non-smoking crowd. Pseudo-science and outright misinterpretation.

At the same time, I really think that smoking should be banned everywhere but bars and clubs that are open after 10. That or buildings designated "Smoking Only". Apartments? Ban it indoors. But places where you are not forced to enter and make it clear that "This place is for people to smoke" whether they are drinking or eating or bowling or dancing, they should be allowed to operate in such a fashion.

If you want a non-smoking restaurant or bar there is a simple solution- Open one up yourself. That's what real people do when confronted with problems. Entrepreneurial solutions, not laws.
