Lol at Ortiz (the freaking title holder at the time) being an "unknown" and calling a legal blow a cheap shot. Its strange people call out Mayweather for this "cheap shot" but forget that Ortiz threw an obvious headbutt just seconds prior.
The more I think about it, I'm not even sure it's a "cheap shot." As a fighter myself, if the ref started the fight and my opponent was just looking at me with his hands down, I would blast him. Why wouldn't you? Would you criticize a soccer player if he scored a goal while the goalie "wasn't ready?" |

I don't think that's such a big deal either. Ali was great sure but so is Mayweather. Whether you like him or not, he will be etched in Boxing's history as one of the greats of his generation. Now if he claims to be better than Joe Louis that's a different matter. |

He's basically claiming to be the best of all-time, better than Ali, Louis, or whoever, which is why he's eager to win at any cost. |

In the pro ranks, boxers have to watch for cheap shots, and have to learn to use them too.
Ortiz's headbutt was wasn't the least bit subtle, and Mayweather easily leaned out of the way. Ortiz deserved some payback, so firing a couple of hard shots when he's not expecting it would seem in order.
I think the big problem is that Mayweather actually ended the fight with the cheap shots. He has too much power to be teeing off on a guy, unexpectedly.
He gave Arturro Gatti the same treatment in 2005, when Gatti turned his head to complain to the ref. |

Now that I think about it, Ortiz doesn't deserve a rematch. He'll just get the beatdown that he would have gotten had Mayweather not punched him like that.
That said, it's a shame Sergio Martinez is a middleweight and can't go down to welterweight. Martinez basically has nobody decent to fight in his weight class and Mayweather and Pac-man won't go up in weight to fight him. I really wonder what it would take for boxing to clean up its horrendously dirty act and give the fans what they want. |
