Don't they work the longest hours in the developed world while having the lowest rate of efficiency in the developed world? |
No. |

Agreed. If she's living at home, she should be putting a serious dent in any loans she has.
Honestly, by Korean standards, what you explained is not all bad. Here they call it 'life'. |
My wife used to work like that but cleared over 4 mill per month. She quit for a job that pays 5 with a credit line for meals. She's older and has a decent career, though.
Tell her sometimes it is good to make a job move. My wife now gets off by 7pm.
Do yourself a favor and don't marry into a Korean ratrace situation where nobody has time and no amount of money is enough to satisfy her. |

Actually the answer is yes, according to a study put out a couple years back. Don't have the link though. But yeah, Koreans placed first for total amount of hours worked and last for efficiency.
Koreans have done well for themselves because, as a group, they are willing to work unusually long hours. But hour for hour, Koreans are the least efficient in the developed world. This according to the study put out. |

He could have added her sleeping hours too into his calculations as sleep is necessary to work the next day. Then he could claim she only makes $4 per hour. |

| Over 2 million won a month is not bad for a young woman. If she's living at home then she's also not paying rent or utilities and eats her parents' food. She should be able to save at least 1 million per month assuming she doesn't party/spend too much. I'd be suspicious if after 3 years she hasn't put a dent in those loans. She's likely saving or giving to her mom a large amount of money that will soon go for her marriage. Have you guys talked about that? |

Well according to a OECD study put out this year Japan beats them in terms of hours worked.

As for efficiency they are working on that.

My Korean girlfriend wakes up at 6 to get ready and go on over an hour and a half of public transportation to get to her job, and finally gets home at around 9:30 PM on a normal day. On other days, she will work until 11PM with no overtime pay (but they'll pay for a cab for her to go home). Busy weekends she will also be expected to come in without pay.
So on a normal day she spends 15.5 work related hours, including transport, getting ready, and her lunch. She gets paid like $2000 Canadian (can't remember the exact Korean won salary) per month. In other words, she makes about $6 per hour to work as a pissant secretary in a dead end job, and that's not including the occasional late nights or unpaid weekends.
She spent several years and racked up tens of thousands of dollars of debt getting a degree so she could do this job (which is basically a secretary position they'd hire a high school girl to do in Canada, however it's considered "prestigious" in Korea because she works in an office in a nice part of Seoul). She can't afford to move out of her parents house with this job or pay back her student loans. If she did move out, she would have to live in a sardine can. Her degree that she spent tens of thousands on is in French, yet she can't speak French.
Her hobbies include getting to go to the gym once a week on Saturday, because that's the only time that it is open and she's not working. Yet she told me when we met three years ago that she wanted to be self-employed or own a business, work an alternative job compared to the Korean corporate route, travel around the world with me, etc.
Yet I have to move to Korea so she can focus on her job? |
Sounds like your GF has a good head on her shoulders since she doesn't have this inflated sense of entitlement that she deserves a certain level of salary that she probably doesn't deserve yet.
Unemployment rate here is low. Great success!
What exactly did you study that qualified you to become an English teacher? |
I'm not an English teacher, I don't even live in Korea. |

the minimum wage here is 4100 an hour I think, so she is doing ok.
what does your girl friend do? |
First, you have no idea how much I make.
I don't consider making $6 per hour okay if you are devoting your entire life to it. You work a job so you can have a certain kind of life. If you work too much to have time for that kind of life, then what's the point? And I don't base who I date on the minimum wage--I have my own standards.
Anyway, this is not about her wage. If she made a crap wage but actually had time for life, to be an interesting person, to see me or even just call me, that would be fine. But she makes a crap wage in order to do what... have a crap life? All I get is the occasional bumpy-bus ride call from her when she's tired and can't make conversation.
She always said she wanted to do interesting stuff. That's why I got into a relationship with her, she presented herself as way different than most Korean girls. She had been and lived all over Europe, was in the music producing club, said she wanted to be a "nomad" and not get a terrible job. When she got this job I was a bit disappointed. I had come to Korea and was working only 3-4 days per week so I could see her and hang out with her, yet we couldn't do anything together.

I was hoping it would kinda be like that, but she can't text me during work at all. Can't call on lunch breaks because she has to do things with coworkers/boss. Her company seems to be a pretty busy one, and she's frequently expected to work late when projects are coming up (and there always seems to be one).
I guess this must be what it's like to date the average Korean salaryman. They have even worse hours. |

True, however I usually date people with money and a job. Or the ability to get a job, after we go traveling and see the world together.
Dating a toothless peasant rice farmer woman would be better than dating a swollen corpse, but I don't choose women on the absolute lowest possible standard. I would choose "none of the above" between a dead body and a barefoot peasant. |

How many 20's something Koreans do you know with at least $150,000 in the bank to start their own business? |
It doesn't cost "at least $150,000" to start one's own business. And this is the problem. She knows a few people now (Korean guys) who have started importing/exporting businesses, even in her OWN FIELD, selling items and are making $10,000 a month while in college full time. I expected her to go and talk to this guy about business when we were drinking with him and she didn't!!

| Korea doesn't exactly make it easy for people to start their own businesses. You can't be successful on dreams and aspirations along. You need money to make money. |
You can use other people's money. Anyway, I started an online business with Korean customers and working one hour a day can pay my living expenses. Startup cost: Zero (unless you count my computer which I already bought).
Just wondering, what business do you have? Because when people are instructing others on the impossibility of business, they usually don't own a business themselves. |
