No, Koreans are going to go to Filipino's and Indians for NT's. The golden age of teaching in Japan ended in the 1990's, I think Korea's golden age for English is coming to a close now. EPIK has had several up and down cycles since 1996, we're definitely seeing a down cycle now.

One thing I noticed tho, they will pay W300k/month for rent?!? This year it's W400k, down from the year before.

The social thinking with Koreans will have to change for that to happen. There is a reason why they limit NETs to the 7 countries and those countries are NOT the Phillipines or India. Its not because they are cheaper. There is a reason why Koreans prefer white westerners from the 7 countries as well. If it was based on cost, Fillipinos and Indians would have been the majority here already.

Knowing about Korean culture and knowing about it to connect with kids takes some time. A newbie can't possibly understand this. I've known many a certified teacher who came here with a western teaching mindset and failed miserably.

explain/elucidate please?

I agree with this. Ridiculing the culture and education system of the country that maintains you is folly. You have to work with it. And people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, lets face it.

Great quote. +100. Nothing more to add.

Most foreigners here are burdened with debts of the type our parents never had to shoulder.

Really? How old are you? Do you think that education debts compare with the cost of raising children for 18+ years? Most foreigners here do not have families and after they service their monthly debt, they can go and party (or whatever). I think you over-spoke here.

. Being forced to ply a living in a foreign, and not particularly welcoming country for a job and a scooter is not a lot to ask, given that these people have been shafted from opportunities by the actions of a reckless few.

'Being forced?" No one is 'forced' to come here or go to any other country for that matter. Don't act like it only started to happen 20 years ago. Going to foreign nations to work has been a standard for millenia. People choose to go because the fields they want to be in have openings in other countries.

I would say for FTs it is coming to a close and rightly so. The younger Korean teachers are far more abel and prepared than their older generation counterparts and can do the job without help from native English teachers.

did i hear somewhere that japanese companies often want to hire people 30 and up for maturity levels? not saying EPIK should go that far, but maybe 26 and up would be a good minimum requirement

I would love it to be 40 and up... Very Happy

I have to wonder just how old calendar is. And what country he hails from. Korea, would be my best guess. And why the serious hate-on for foreign teachers?

This is clearly an angry individual with some real hate in his posts. Along with some severe misguided thinking in a lot of what he says on this board.

What's with the disgruntlement, cal? Did someone with white skin do something mean to you when you were a kid? Assuming that you are no longer a kid. Physically, probably not. But mentally and emotionally would seem another matter.

Grow up maybe? Lose the hate and anger?
