I know he runs a hagwan but that still doesn't really explain how a poll with a final category that says 'more than ten million' doesn't go high enough. Rolling Eyes

I guess you were being literal with your words (nothing wrong with that, of course!), while most of us probably took figuratively or didn't think long and hard enough about what you meant.

None of you make very much money. I don't consder 10 mil per month a lot of money much less worth bragging about.

It's kind of like the guy in the weight room in a small town boasting about lifting 300 lbs while his friends can only put up 250.

I guess considering the field, with little else to talk about, people like to aggrandize themselves by talking about making more money than the other little fish in the little pond.

What a shitty thread topic.
Anyone that's already posted their earnings has lost more than they
could ever hope to gain.
What is to be learned or gained by such a topic? Those that make a real
effort to be successful ARE successful, those that don't simply aren't.
Even so, the harm of such a topic outways the benefits if Korean hogwan
unions get wind of this and base pay scales, salary caps on it, man....wth....
NEVER OPENLY TALK ABOUT YOUR EARNINGS even on an anonymous eslcafe
thread!
Even Unigwons are bound by the local hogwon association and what they
set. Dumb, simply dumb. I wouldn't even be surprised if this thread was began
by some news reporter looking for an angle to slam foreigners and what they
are earning.

Well, for what it's worth at least 1 poster runs a hagwon, so that has nothing to do with teacher's salaries. I don't think any of these big earners are

really just teaching.

But knowing the k-media, who can tell what they will make of it.

Korean newspapers have posted several stories on high-earning Korean English teachers who make several times more than any foreigner teachers without anyone blinking an eyelash.

If I were Dave or a NET in Korea, I'd be more concerned that a reporter would stumble into the pedo-friendly current events forum.

Welcome to the real world. Dave's is just a microcosm of what's out there in the sense that in all areas of life there are people (usually men) who strive to rise to the top, salary wise, and look down on others below them. In banking they call them peasants, in show biz they call them muggles, on here they call them FOB losers etc...etc..Anyone who posts on here with a big salary or having a go at those people posting big salaries has not won the battle yet. The battle to get to the state where they don't have to feel 'better' than someone else to be happy.

Why would someone ask this question on this forum and most importantly why would others care about the earnings of other English teachers here in Korea? In Korea there are lots of opportunities to find extra work legally and under the table that could easily boost your income into the 4 million + a month range. I am very suprised and disappointed that people on this forum (even Ttompatz) would post how much they earn. It shows a lack of class and most importantly modesty.

I had a guy that use to work at my school as part of the after school program. He use to bother me all the time about how much I made and what I was getting paid for overtime. It use to drive me nutz. I never gave him an honest answer as it wasn't his business. It is up to the individual teacher how much money they want to make. If you are a public school teacher there are lots of opportunities to work overtime and pick up extra classes. Myself and many of my fellow SMOE teachers have been able to do so. Also, if your are working at a hogwan you can work a second job but you just need to make sure to due it legally which really isn't that hard. At the same time there is something to be said about enjoying one's freetime and the overall satisfaction of one's job. Anyways, I hope this thread dies soon. Rolling Eyes

Of all expats, ESL teachers are generally the most insecure.

Hence the need to constantly brag (I might add, brag about nothing...4 million a month is nothing... even 10 is not that big of deal compared to what a lot of others make, such as the foreigners who work in professional positions abroad).

Maybe it's because the job is generally low-status and the average ESL teacher slogging it out at his University or Hogwan has to deal with the stigma of being "a loser back home" that they feel they have something to prove.

Is 5k an hour normal? I tried to talk to my boss but every time I speak to her, she beats me and makes me pay her for the time she spent beating me, last year I made -10 million won. But next year I am going to break even and maybe make enough money for a hot meal, and maybe new underwear.

10 million won a month is considerably more than the average salary back home in North America or any of the other countries of the Big Seven.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with talking about your earnings with your peers. Some people may feel jealous when I talk about my salary -- never bragging about it, mind you, just explaining what I earn in a frank manner -- but others can use the information to understand how much they are worth and how much they should be earning. Really, the social stigma in Western countries against talking about salaries was started by employers for obvious reasons. Why would they want their employees discussing how much they earn, especially when some employees get paid much more for doing the same job? This stigma manifests itself in the form of policies outright preventing employees from discussing their earnings, even at traditionally low-paying jobs such as Wal-Mart. So look at this thread as a way to educate yourself as to how much you should be earning, not as a way for a group of insecure expats to validate their lives in Korea.

Yes, some earn around a million dollars a year. However, they don't have a life. They get up at 5am, first classes at 6, then spend the rest of the day either in class or being chauffeured to one, only to return home at 11 o'clock at night. I saw a story about one of these teachers, a guy in his 50's, appeared to be living off those vitamin drinks and kimbab triangles. I'd be surprised if he lives to be 60.
