A Korean's world map is extremely limited. Their concept of foreign travel extends only to America and Canada, usually, because they've been indoctrinated to think these two countries are the number 1 places on the planet.
No adventure! When I meet a Korean who dreams of visiting the mysterious pyramids, the great temples of cambodia, the Amazon, or maybe even the "mountains of the moon" in Africa, I think I'll faint.
Travel to them is usually not for the pure experience, but to study at a prestigious uni, or to link up with a lot of other Koreans. |

True, but I think it can be pared down even more. How many people do you think make it to Newfoundland for the scenery there? Or to PEI, or Saskatchewan? Or Nunavut?? I think the world map shows Toronto and Vancouver surrounded by some mysterious land.
Student: You're Canadian? I've been to Canada!
Me: Vancouver?
Student: How did you know?!?!?
Me: I'm psychic
Student:
(Add extra step if guess is wrong, and have to correct to Toronto.) |

it is all too true that koreans don't experience a place when they go abroad. some do. a funny story:
my korean boyfriend studied in canada for almost two years. he wanted to get the full experience and learn to speak english of course. at his school there was a high concentration of koreans, and of course, they were all buddies. my bf didn't want to hang out with koreans. he wanted to learn the language and mix with the people. as a result, he was shunned by his korean classmates and became an outsider quickly.
i laughed when he told me why....when they would speak korean to him, he would only answer in english.....it really pissed them off. they called him a traitor.
being your average salary man now, he wants out of korea as soon as possible. he can picture his miserable future here so clearly. it's scary.
anyway, back on topic. while aboad some koreans will go out of their way to have some experience. but most won't. |
