That's not that odd of a question, I've had conversations with people here who had related observations. To them it seems some foreigners behave as if they care more about their animal than their dad or husband, which seems odd to Koreans. In fact it is odd. So that's why the question comes up.

I think they were just trying to make conversation though

Wow....... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

They probably produce more garlic in Gilroy than in all of Korea. Rolling Eyes

Anyways, I get the gun question a lot. Koreans apparently think everything in the movies is true Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Oh, and I get the "are hamburgers American" line a lot too. No, it's German, and no, sandwiches are British. And the "what do Americans eat" line, to which I respond "whatever the hell they feel like eating."

This is not far from the truth in America.

I'm always amused by how shocked a lot of Koreans are that I still speak to my parents! There seems to be a belief in Korea that Westerners are booted out of their family home at the age of 18 and never speak to their family again.

The best classes I have ever had are based on these stereotypes or misconceptions. I like to explain the reality from my perspective, and have them explain a misconception the West holds about Korea. Really gets dialogue going!
