You DON'T have to explain it to us. We know some people have the viewpoint you espouse. We also know, not everyone thinks the same way.

You are not right. You have a differing OPINION not the only opinion on the topic. This is how the world is and not getting bent out of shape or having fascist governments to enforce one person's idea of 'manners' down everyone's throats or have everyone believe in only one set way of living is known as 'tolerance and understanding.'

Can't believe I have to explain.... etc...

I think I made it clear that I'm disgusted by both. The human owner of the dog is disgusting, and the person who spits in public is disgusting.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that the human owner is disgusting. But for sure, pet culture needs to change. Change the culture and you will change the behavior of those pet owners. With billions of people on little planet earth, and with increasing urbanization can pet ownership really go on this way? Teach your pet to do its business inside! Actually, it's quite possible to train your pet to do this.

The difference is that the dog is a dumb animal. Yet even it doesn't go out of its way to add sound effects to its unpleasant act. The person loudly (and disgustingly) coughing up his lung before tossing it onto the sidewalk does. We're supposed to be the more highly evolved species for christ's sake, Why are some of us still behaving like farm animals.

Thats just it Scorpion, without reforming our pet culture we basically live in a barn. We could change this very quickly by just training our pets to pee/poo inside.

If you want to spit, litter and urinate indiscriminately you are free to do so within the confines of your home. Go to town lads. That is your space. (What's that? You're saying you'd never do that because it's gross?) Yet the public sphere belongs to everyone. It's not yours to abuse. You are not permitted to litter, spit, or urinate on other peoples property. To do so shows disrespect for others.

I simply can't believe I have to explain this to university graduates. Confused

Agreed, but at the end of the day there really is no difference between human and canine bodily fluid. If youre disgusted by one then logically you should be grossed out by the other. Pet owners can be proactive about this by training their pets to do their business inside.

You would think spitting and public urination killed Scorpion's parents or something. Basically he thinks the government should conform everybody to his version of good manners. Does he call the cops when the kids in his class use banmal?

In other news, I would never have thought I'd be on the same side of an argument as koamerican.

Scorpion - I hardly feel that it should be necessary to explain to you that the entire world need not feel compelled to conform to the requirements of your delicate sensibilities.

I just re-read this thread and damn if it isn't some funny shiznit. I think I'll take my dog out for a dump now and not pick it up. Maybe I might just spit (hawk some lungers) a few times (the air is a bit dirty today) while I'm at it. Oh, and I do feel the need to urinate. I could do it before I go out, but why not multitask.
