For once, I agree with you.
Being here for just about four years now, I have learned the bus routes pretty well. So I am pissed that everything that i have learned is now down the toilet I hardly ever ride the bus or subway anymore, but today July 1st I did. From Hannam to Yangjae took FOREVER It was easily 15 minutes longer than normal with those crazy middle lanes. When I went past Gangnam station, there was a motorcycle guy laying in the middle of the road--the aftermath of a collison with a bus. I bet we will see an increase of sidewalk use by motorcycles....
The colors of the buses, not too great, but no big deal. But has anyone noticed the cheap quality of the paiint that they used and the workmanship that went into it? All these buses with a nice factory paint job now look like crap. I give it six months before the paiint starts to fall off.
I can read Korean well, so it only being in Korean is no big deal to me. But the buses have hardly any Korean destination points on them! You have to look at the map in order to find the correct bus to where you want to go. Which, there are about 100 destinations on there in the smallest font possible (I am still young so I can see it, but older folks are screwed). Five buses have gone by since you started searching for the correct bus...
Korean planning in action once again folks.... |

When I was outside today a Korean man actually stopped me on the street and said the bus system is confusing and he feels bad for foreigners here who have to figure it out.
It's not that bad. Be patient everyone. |

Kangnam I didnt take the bus from/to Itaewon. When I was on the bus, my wife told me the bus that I was on (400) is the old 78-3. I dont think she was right though. But then again, I didnt look through the 100 bus stops listed on the post. I stopped when I got to Hannam, which is before Itaewon on any bus coming from Yangjae/Gangnam. I am going to watch the Korean news tonight with my wife and get her to translate for me and report back to everyone tomorrow on what the news had to say about the confusion. Actually I can report back tonight. I keep forgeting that I have computer at home now.
Anyone have any idea where they got the hundreds of volunteers handing out brouchers to people?

No, its worse.
There used to be 4 buses going from seoul station to Shillim the 85, 25, 26, 142-1
now there are 2, the 504 and the 152. Hmmmm... now each bus is packed so ful that I gave up catching one after the 3rd set of completely packed buses came and went. Can Koreans honestly see cause and effect relationships? I dont think so. This system sucks. Its more then just illogical and inconvenient- they took a system that worked fine and screwed it-
get this- there are really people that think this had nothing to do with money! how naive can you get?!?! |

EDIT- before any wingnut comes on here and says "transfers are free!" or "you are actually saving money"
I give you this

| Even those traveling within the capital city couldn't help but frown at the increased costs. The basic fare was raised to 800 won from 650 won for buses operating along the main and branch routes around the city, while fares for those connecting with satellite cities ranged from 500 won to 1,400 won. Free transit onto the subway is also available but the rate goes up in proportion with the distance. The actual fares paid, therefore, can rise as much as 50 percent from the current rates. |

Actually, transfers need to be free because there is more need to transfer as there are few bus routes. I've never had to transfer before, but now there is no bus from Kangnam to Itaewon that I can find.

It is actually ironic that the green buses represent the trees and mountains and the blue buses represent the blue sky. What trees? What blue sky? If they want to spruce up the city environs, use non-polluting buses, plant more trees (many of which were killed to make room for the new bus lanes) and control the litter problem. |
