The 72% of women "would like to date a foreigner" statistic doesn't sound real.
Perhaps in some secret fantasy world they have, but the average Korean woman 1) has no understanding of other cultures or relating, and 2) is very influenced by what society thinks of her, thus would never actually do it in real life.
Agree with the 18% have actually done it, that sounds about right. |
I thought 18% sounded high, especially if that's an average between Korean men and women. Who was in the survey sample? |
18% is ridiculously high considering the percentage of foreigners that make up the country's population.
Korea isn't a cage and we aren't the only foreigners Koreans come in contact with. Plenty of Koreans have left the country to study or work and have dated foreigners during that time. |

Does someone have time to read this Korean-language article and double check the statistics. Sometimes these are calculated in a non-standard way to "prove" a point.
For all we know it could be marriages as a percent of the foreigner population instead of the Korean population. But 18% does sound high for this. |

| If you see a mixed race couple walking down the street holding hands in Seattle, maybe it will make you look twice, but most of us would forget about it immediately. Less social stigma (though it's not like that everywhere in the US). In a small, mostly irrelevant country like Korea, it sticks in the craw of local men, and that's a fairly obvious observation. |
I think people overestimate the "social stigma" of interracial dating in areas of the U.S. that were historically extremely racist. It's really not the issue it once was. Sure, there are still racists around... but they have just enough sense to mind their own damn business.
And I have to agree on the point of dating someone of a different race/culture. I'd be surprised if there weren't strong evolutionary benefits to our ancestors getting together with the most exotic mate they could find. |
