FYI Hangeul is the writing system. The language is "Korean" (in English) or "Hankuk-mal/Hankuk-eo" in Korean. |

Scary isn't it? Especially when the OP screams murder about missunderstandings |

To all these people criticizing the OP for not having the language skills to handle the situation, how many of YOU can say "you are mistaken, I did not steal these pants" in Korean?
And if you can, do you think you could get an irate ajumma to understand you?
5 years of studying this language, I doubt I could have handled that situation any better than the OP. |

Bringing an old pair of pants to 'check' the other merchandise... pretty unusual.
Most people:
try pants on
bring a tape measure
I've shopped in Korea enough to know they don't carry my size, unless I get it custom. How long have you lived/shopped here? |

No, but I could have said "I didn't do. These pants are mine. I didn't steal. Look at this. These pants are old. Your pants are new. No same pants in this store."
I'd have brought a tape measure or just tried them on. If that wasn't possible, I'd have either gone elsewhere or risked getting the wrong size. That kind of shop doesn't charge a whole lot for pants. I've gotten some pants that were too big, had them tailored for about 3 dollars, and worn them. |

Clearly the last week or so has been enough to prove that this statement is 100% true all of the time in Korea. |

I dunno, but I sure as heck don't walk into stores with a backpack and carry around other clothes to try on and compare.
Not only that, pant sizes here are one of the few things in Imperial sizes or the ol S/M/L. Almost all western-style clothing is also made with export in mind.
Between the backpack and the odd behavior, I have to wonder if the dude was also dressed like a bum. |

Perhaps he was. But I'd bet a chunner that the adjumma asked to see the contents of his backpack and he refused by citing some sort of privacy concern. Those shopkeepers generally won't call the police without really good suspicion, so she would have made some effort to confirm that there was stolen merchandise in his bag. |

lol! on the nutzo comments from the posters above bashing the op ...now they're having a "CSI" discussion over the ops appearance and backpack and whether he should have brought his own tape measure with him when he went shopping.
Where do they get these people from? It's like a bad Seinfeld episode.
Too funny! ...and too many posters on here with too much time on their hands and really freaky imaginations.
No wonder so many teachers get a rep for being loco.
If the ops situation hadn't been scary this would really be laughable.
Now that probably lit a fuse under the next poster with a napoleon complex who can't wait to bash the op.
Almost can't wait to see what someone writes next (apologies op). |

| What's wrong with bringing a tape measure? When sizes are different and there's nowhere to try on clothing, it makes sense. Whenever I travel in a different country and want to buy clothing, I (or a tailor) use a tape measure. It's common sense. |

It's the utter lack of common sense that led him to his troubles. The fact that you can't see that says volumes about you as well. |

Agreed. What's wrong with trying pants on??? Questionable call, and questionable behavior that lead to questions being asked. The shop owner's reaction is justifiable. |
