Likely not a mugging, but a poor pitiful me routine. Get a kind stranger to help carry bag. If helps, likely a sob story can help, spin tale, ask for some money.
Maybe this scam is the cousin of "I need to take a bus, train, plane, and need some money. Please help me." |

Are you serious?
I'm gonna take a guess that you've never been to Seoul. |

Dear Old Hands,
Please either read an entire thread before commenting or be funny. Either way you're golden.
Cheers!

This 100%.
(1) It's a great way to narrow down the field and find out who the suckers are. All suckers will accept. But not everyone who accepts is a sucker.
(2) Build rapport.
(3) Ask for money in one form or another. A few bucks for dinner because she hasn't eaten. Lots of bucks for some sex. A bus ticket, train ticket etc.. |

Went up to Seoul today. Ran into a buddy in Itaewon. We were down a side street because there was a smaller foriegn food mart off to the side of Taco Bell. Anyways, bag lady came up and asked us to help her. Told my buddy, it was a scam. She got pretty pissed when I said that. We went in this small foriegn mart and then she came in. She rudely told us to get the H out of her way. I told her to get some manners or shut her mouth. As we walked out, she told us to F ourselves. I told her only a W ho re talks like that and we were out of ear range and walked away after that. Don't know what she had in mind. But watch out, take a pic and report it to the police. I don't live there so didn't bother. She had a large backpack and a smaller bag. It was heavy for a woman, but when I read this blog, I knew she was probably trouble.
If you're a female, especially walk away and fast. |

I repeat it was a side street not the main road. Also, she seemed Korean to me but spoke excellent English.
I suggest going there on a weekend afternoon as a group, maybe 4 or 5 guys. Ask her for help and find out what's going on. |

So that's where they're hanging out. Good advice- be careful. |

why not just call the police about it? |
Police? The same police that took 13 hours to respond after an ethnic Korean from China raped and killed a woman?
Anyway, I don't mind carrying someone's bags, but not to some unknown location in a foreign country. Thanks for the heads-up. |

If she were simply in need of money why not just sit on the corner with a placard, sob story and begging bowl? I think most people would be happy to give money to a Vietnamese mail order bride that went wrong in Korea.
I think this scam is all about what is actually in the bag. |

She looked like an older Korean woman. When I left the store, she started speaking Korean to a woman behind the counter. But her English was pretty good. I wonder if she was an ex hooker or something. Not sure. Maybe a group of them into it together, who knows? |

She gives you the bag, you carry it.
You follow her into the shop.
The shopkeeper accuses you of shoplifting and opens the bag.
Inside is some object from the store.
They agree to drop charges if you pay them some money. |

Nice, I wonder how well this would work if the police got involved.
In China, lots of scams like this where they bring you to a place and offer you fruit (at almost 800 USD), if you call the police, the police will sometimes defend the shop keeper (usually not but not always). |
