I paid the day the asked me for the money. No it isnt a battle worth fighting I was just inquiring about the situation.
Last year living in spain I had a battle worth fighting and I won. THe landlord came to me the day I was leaving (he wanted to wait till the last minute to give me my large deposit). When he came he told me that I had to pay to have the entire house painted. He showed me a mark on the wall in my room which I wiped off with water. He then flipped out and said I was wrong and that all the paint was messed upa nd he had to paint the whole house and that he needed more money than my deposit to do it. It was like $1500 split 3 ways (he wasnt going to charge the one spanish roommate because she wasnt leaving). Well I stood there and had a screaming match with him until he agreed to give me back my deposit because I called him a crook etc untill he caved in. That was a fight worth fighting. This on the other hand was a simple inquiry about a petty ammount of cash.
As for the paint deal, this apartment was pristine when I moved in and pristine when I moved out. There was one real scratch on the wall from the shitty unconnected headboard of the bed. That was not my fault, because I didnt put the janky bed in the room in the first place. But I agreed to let him keep 100 euros from my deposit to fix that. I still feel like i won that fight. Sometimes landlords just make your life hell. |

| But ya know what, it would not surprise me in the least if there are 'maintenance clauses' and 'rate increase' clauses in there. It makes sense. |
While I think the amounts in question for the original poster are trivial, I've had three apartments for varying time frames, and none have ever raised anything in the middle of a lease. The only maintenance I was asked to pay for was damages that I caused.
Not saying it's the norm, just putting it out there for ewlandon. |
So electricity/gas/water bills never increased while you were living somewhere? |
Your question is easy to answer. Bills change every month, they are basically never the same. But if there is a flat fee agreed upon in the contract that is paid to the landlord, the landlord doesnt just call you up and say its %25 higher now. That is why i started this thread because I got the impression that the landlord just decided to start charging me more. |
I've asked you this before, and I'm going to ask it again - what does the rental agreement say?
Does it say that it is an absolute fixed price, or does it say anything about variation?
My maintenance fee changes every month (water included), so that's why I think that it's very possible to have a situation where it may not be fixed.
So, what does the rental agreement say? |

| Captain Korea, you are talking to a teacher in an apartment that is rented by the school. All he wants to do is pay the bills but the landlord never gives him the bills. Why is that situation so hard to understand? |

I'm talking to an adult who says that something seems amiss.
I'm asking about what it actually says in the contract. Why is that so hard? |

Ive said it before and i'll say it again. I DONT HAVE ACCESS to any rental agreement because it is rented by the school. |

| Captain Korea, your wife handles the bills, right? Because nobody pulls out the entire rental agreement and waves it simply because the landlord isn't telling a tenant when to pay the 5,000 won water bill. And teachers don't sign or get a copy of the rental agreements their schools make with the owners of the apartments. |

lordy lordy lordy thought I'd never see the day - ok - Capt K here is correct but the miscommunication is this - he's not referring to the actual rental agreement - in your school contract, there should be a paragraph, or line, or clause, referring to what bills the teacher is responsible for, i.e., utilities, and how they will be paid, i.e., teacher responsible to pay, school pay and deduct from teacher's salary, etc.
what does that say? |

| Surely you can sue the landlord for the missing 1,000 won? I think you'd have a great case - take him to The Hague for crimes against humanity (hence the term "Oh, the humanity!"). I think you'd be able to convince them you're a poor, innocent EFL teacher who, without warning, was mentally battered by this deranged madman who put your very livelihood and health at risk by calling the school. I'm convinced the school would corroborate your claim and confirm that you're hanging on to your job by a hair, because of that water bill. |

So, to be clear.
-You didn't pay the water bill for a few months.
-You don't know what it says in the rental agreement regarding bill rates.
hmmmm....
Maybe the rate went up... maybe you're being charged a penalty for being late. Either way, I'm stymied by someone complaining about paying $1 above expectations... expectations that seem to be misinformed.
Luckylady is correct... perhaps your solution lies in your school contract. Does it say anywhere in there that you should only be paying 4000 for water for the entire contract?

What would it matter who handles the bills in my house? For the record, I have, and do, handle bills here. When I was in school provided housing, I paid the bills then too - and don't recall ever grimacing about a rate going up by $1. |
