Unfortunately, on some level this thread is as good an example of why we're screwed as any. Forget about the fact that there's no consensus on issues in the US (As I recall, violence as in the burning of a mosque was more or less the subject of the thread).
The ability of fewer and fewer people (westerners on this board) to even be able to focus on a subject longer than a few minutes (or comments) is more or less gone. What takes priority in the medium of this board, similarly reflected all over the net in general is that you can express yourself.
The "democratization" of the internet has lead to every opinion getting equal weight in "issues" like needing to compare unfairness about how Korea is treated on the board to a shooting tragedy/violence in the US. The disconnect is so great at times that if you had this conversation in real life you'd probably just walk away from it. The need to exercise whatever personal agendas people carry into internet "discussions" is almost always enough to suffocate any really good questions or reflecting on a problem.
The medium is the message and the message is that any serious thought is likely to be interrupted in just a few minutes.
Ironically, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the psychotic levels of alienation in the US are due to people not being able to have a coherent conversation with anyone anymore. |
