The way your post about it reads I thought you'd been there.

Sorry if I gave you that impression. It's something I read after my visit to Jawoldo, that I really wish I had done!

Bon voyage.

Do you recall the ferry times? I can't seem to find a schedule.

ɵ / baeknyongdo? is quite nice; I was there for a full week. Don't forget that you can see North Korea from there, though it's a rural place and there are only about four houses. Most of the people there have families on the other side, and they want reuinification more than anybody else in the South. They were thinking of splitting the whole island up between the two before but later it was decided to give it to the south, I don't remember how though.
Also, North Korea doesn't recognize the NLL which goes to the north of the island, so there are a lot of navy people there and a more tension than most other places. There's also a really interesting place on the west of the island with oddly-shaped cliffs. It's actually a military zone so you have to sign in, but it's quite interesting.
There's also a beach there with perfectly rounded stones that have a therapeutic effect on the soles of the feet...

Just got pmmed, and this was my response:

Quote:
Definately..first you want to think of where to stay; there are two places I'd recommend. There are the ι places by the beach, right where you get off, and there are places in the town of . is where most people live and there are pc bangs and so on, but by the beach there are little bars, 帶 as they're called, and they're quite good. The sand is really hard and cars can drive on it - go towards the lights on the beach and after crossing two small streams you'll be there.
If you walk it's about 30 minutes from the beach to .
If you're interested in old churches, the second oldest church in Korea is on the island.
The first day you're there I recommend you go to û (I think that's what it's called), which is where you can see N. Korea. The reason is that when it's cloudy you can't see it, so you should try right away just in case.
On the second or third day get a car or some sort of transportation and go to the west side of the island, (just remembered the name now). If the weather is nice you can also go to that beach with the rounded stones, which is just a bit southwest of .
On the way to from the beach, just before the library, you can see a house that says 'Hemingway'; this is a house on the first floor and a bar on the second. I know the people there and the lady that runs that place is really nice. She has a daughter who would be in grade 1 now who is really smart and never complains or cries.

This info might be interesting for others too...

If anyone else is interested I'd go to Baengnyongdo. I just spent the weekend on Jawoldo and found the atmosphere there different than Deokjeokdo. I liked both though. Jawoldo seemed a little more festive but maybe that's because I went to the other on a weekend that looked like it would be stormy. By the way, Swiss James, I got 2 mosquito bites and I was outside the whole time. hehe

Congrats on the mogies. Surprised to hear Jawol do was more festive. Every time I've been to Deokjeokdo I've found the nights chockfull of drunks with firecrackers. Can't get any more festive than that, now can it? Hmmmm?

No, why? Was that his location?

BTW, I'm off to Baengnyeongdo myself this weekend. The mother of all Yellow Sea Islands. Should be fun.

I'm glad I went, but it's definitely not the best place for a regular vacation spot.

The natural airport beach, and the natural foot-massage beaches were way cool, as were the views of the North Korean coast and the awesome rock formations that could be seen on the boat tour around the island. I was also surprised to see that there is a small community of hae-nyeo (women divers, usually found on Chejudo) on the island.

However, it's very difficult to get around the island. Unlike other Yellow Sea Islands, Baengnyeongdo is fairly big, and doesn't have regular buses or minbak vans going around the island that can give you rides. Even if my minbak gave me a bicycle like some I've been to on other islands, the size of the island would have made this impractical.

I never managed to make it to the Hemmingway bar that Mithridates liked so much, either.

All in all, a pretty cool glimpse of the most remote outpost of the republic, but it's one of the few places where I really wished I had a car with me.
