| I'm sure Samsung is doing well with profitability and market share, but I think Sony still has the reputation for top of the line quality at the moment. That may be starting to change though. This is a nuanced discussion we are having, but what seemed immature was a grown man in a business meeting saying simply "Samsung is a better company than Sony". This is very much a simplification of what is a very complex tech/marketing battle ground. |

Company X is better then company Y is silly indeed!
Samsung is better then Sony in certain product areas and vice-versa.
Sony has been big internationally for longer, hence it has a reputation (and good products) but I am sure (this is for Dr Buckie) that it has done more than its fair share or copyright infringement and corporate sabotage and espionage....samsung is not alone in this, far from it and it is not a "korean tradition" but rather a corporate tradition. |

[/quote]University of Wisconsin Sues Samsung Over Chip Patent
The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation is suing Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest maker of computer memory chips, for allegedly using a patented technology developed by the University. The technology reportedly at the heart of the Samsung lawsuit is the same as previous legal actions against Sony and Toshiba.

judging a company on lawsuits pertaining to patent infringement is a bit silly - good luck finding an IT company that hasn't been involved in a lawsuit over patent infringement.
sony has a lot more name recognition (though samsung ranked #1 in increasing it's brand equity in 2003 - report by Interbrand) and more experience but it is definitely degrading whereas samsung is growing very fast - it's already #3 in the worldwide market for cell phones (#1 if you base that only on CDMA phones). sony won't die off but more and more it will probably be seen as a walkman/ nintendo company. |

it is hard to measure these 2 companies against each other. The biggest and best from Korean and Japan, I suppose. Unless I was born yesterday, Sony doesn't make cars. Samsung does. Sony has the playstation.
They are like apples and oranges. |

Except when they are both apples or both oranges as in when they produce similar or identical goods.... |

| actually, samsung is pretty much no longer involved in the auto industry. it sold 70% of the company to renault in 2000. samsung still owns 30% of the company but really exercises no control over the production or design. |
