You must live in a quiet area.
I'd love to open my windows at night, but when I do I invariably get woken by someone yelling at the top of their voice at 3am. |
+1. Not an option in Korea. Soundproofing is good when the windows are closed however. Also, opening the windows at night has no effect when it's 20 something degrees even at that time and still humid. Forget it. When I was in Canada, this summer, it was 15 degrees overnight with no humidity. Now, that was paradise to open the windows with.
(BTW: I tell older Koreans aged 40's and up about opening the windows back in Canada and they are Chup-da and Chew - wah! Then, I tell them about sleeping with A/C all night long. They make the same noises. Weird.) |

Hey all,
I just moved here and I live in a small studio in ansan. My air conditioner has been on for about 20 hours each day since Monday and I'm scared my bill is going to be very high. Any recommendations on how to cool down and use my air conditioner less? Also, when does it start to cool down? |
It won't be very high. What's an extra 50 000won? |
When does it cool down? It can go down tempwise slightly in the next couple of weeks. But the disgusting humidity seems to stubbornly stay in the air till around September 25th without fail. Often, the Koreans will take this as a sign to turn off the A/C early in September and it will actually seem worse to us because it's still hot and humid. (Only slightly less so but worse due to no A/C.)
However, by September 25th, the humidity breaks and for the next month or so, it is really pleasant outside. Clear blue skies become the norm. Low to mid 20's in the afternoons, sunny and dry (with no humidity). Don't be surprised when you're enjoying the weather outside on a nice 25 degree afternoon with beautiful dry and warm weather, wearing shorts in a t-shirt, to see any Korean over age 35 or 40 wearing coats and thick long pants wearing gloves. Strangest thing you ever did see. (You get an idea of how much they love this humid muggy heat here.)
By the end of October through to mid November, it is still somewhat warm, but requires a light jacket at night. It will be in the mid to upper teens temperature wise. Autumn in Korea is actually quite nice, if you can make it out to the countryside and bike, hike, whatever. |

Let me add that winters are not too bad. Just a little cold at time. Odd cold spell with wind chills that make it feel minus 15. But those only happen for 2 or 3 days for maybe a couple of times during that season. Often, it's minus 5 overnight and plus 5 in the afternoons. Enough to turn the heat on slightly at night and sleep with a thick quilt. But can, in February, get up to 13 to 15 degrees some afternoons.
Be warned if you are new here, schools will delay turning on the heat in winter. If you have some nice fleece slippers (not the schools cheap slippers), your feet will stay warm and you wear your jacket inside school sometimes; it'll be fine. (Though some of the older Koreans will crank the heat to an insane level in some of their teachers room but not elsewhere in the school.) Lack of heat at school doesn't bother me. But, if you're South African, you might cry foul. Just dress for warmth and not style.
Personally, I'll take the cold over this gross muggy heat any day of the week.
