Well, here's how you know IPIC is an idiot. His moniker would have you believe he's rich enough to buy stuff with cash (i.e. he's rich.) The most amusing part for me is that truly rich people use debt to their advantage, meaning, though they might have the ability to pay for something "in cash," that's actually quite stupid financially.
So basically, IPIC chose a moniker where he'd have you believe he's rich, but he clearly knows nothing about money. (Although apparently he makes 4-5 million per month despite working less than 20 hours per week. Ok.) |
4-5 million won per month is not rich. Nowadays, it's very middle-class.
I personally know someone who invests so much in the stock market that it affects the value of stocks and another who's to inherit a billion dollar business when his father retires in a couple of years. That's rich. |
Jesus H. Christ. Rich as an English teacher is not the same as rich as a venture capitalist. Regardless, my point was about IPIC being rich was that he's short-term cash-rich (if you can even believe his claims) rather than long term wealthy. |
Whatever you say. Fact remains that some of the long-timers here earn considerably more than 4-5 million won per month. |

Yea... but he said nice neighboorhood. I wouldnt consider Sungshin/Hansung nice. The highlight of Sungshin is all the girls walking around in miniskirts and Hansung is a dump. Heywa is nice though.
I lived in the Gangbuk/Seongbuk area for a long time. Still miss it and wouod live there over Itaewon/HBC any day. But yea... Im in the 1% of the expat population that doesnt need to live in Itaewon to enjoy Korea. |
facepalm
You realize those three areas are a grand total of 15 min apart.. by foot..
Just like every area of Seoul, they have nice spots and bad spots. However, I would really challenge you to find an area in Hansung (Seongbuk BTW, not sure where you think it is located) that is trashy. The area near the university spreading out backwards to Hyehwa, across to where the diplomats live and down towards Bomun are all pretty nice areas in my opinion.
Either way, whatever your opinion of the area. It is centrally located in the city, fairly cheap with lots of activities to enjoy.
granted though, the backside of Sungshin, opposite the university, does have some dumps, but generally is a nice area as well until you go north a bit to the Girum/Mia area or East to Dongmyo. |

Geez. Only 3 of my friends have PhDs here in Korea, and they're the ones making that much. The rest are either MA holders or have been working uni jobs since before competition got tougher, so they were grandfathered in. The 4 that make under 36 million a year have no MA, nor are they currently working for one, so they don't really mind making 30. They're married to Koreans, so have secondary jobs anyway.
Again, the majority of the dozens—yes dozens, because when you work in uni and have a spouse who works in uni, you tend to know a lot of uni teachers. How is this a difficult concept?—of uni teachers that I know make over 36 million a year, myself included. It's not a hell of a lot of money, but it's comfortable.
Enough with the off-topic ranting, now, because it's clear that you're never going to disclose your magical job that pays more than that for fewer hours, nor are you going to tell us about your incredible vacation time.
For the OP: We were able to get our key money down from 5 million to 2 million, because we have a dog and were worried that the pooch might do some damage and the landlady might keep the whole thing. Our rent was only raised by 50k a month, so it was worth it. The dog ended up only damaging a small piece of molding when we first moved in and he was still a puppy, which we will have replaced on our own dime before we move out. We are in Incheon, though, so it's a fair bit cheaper than what you'll find in Seoul. |

Ok, I swore I'd never respond to IPIC's posts ever again, but this is too juicy...
In fact, IPIC stalks MY posts and follows ME around like he claims other do to him. He also just quoted ME above with the "rent free" comment. If you look at this thread, you'll notice I used that last week, in a thread IPIC was also posting in.
Just start ignoring this guy. I've said it before and I'll say it again: his only purpose is to troll these forums. If you don't feed a troll it will die. |

i may be wrong, but i always assumed IPayInCash = smarter than the average bear. my husband and i "pay in cash" and avoid awards/membership/point/club cards like the plague. i enjoy reading his posts, though i dont always agree with him, and i never got the impression that he bragged about his wealth. |

I think it's safer to assume no local bank will issue him a credit card. I'll let you guess why. |
