My recruiter keeps insisting that you can't go through a channeler. I have found so many teachers and employers who confirm that the channelers work that I am starting to pull my hair out over this. How do I convince my recruiter to accept the document from a channeler? I already have a job offer from a school, but the school only works with one recruiter, so I have no way to go around them.

I was stressing out big time about this as well, but I am pleased to confirm that I just got a Visa confirmation for a hagwon in Jeju City using an FBI check from a channeler. For the record, I used National Background Check, Inc., which includes the frustrating note at the end, but is printed on the blue paper, includes the seal and signature, and claims to be one of the few channelers whose results can be apostilled.

However, I did apply directly with the school, not through a recruiter, so your mileage may vary.

I hope this is a load off for people that were as freaked out as I was a few weeks ago, at least.

I had applied for a job using my background check from National Background Check Inc. The recruiter initially emailed me saying "this was clearly from a channeler and we cannot use it." I replied that I had ordered another one from the FBI at the same time "just in case" and it should arrive any day...she replied back saying she "just called the immigration office, looks like they just changed their policy again in December, we can once again use a channeler."

i'm about to put my 2 weeks notice in here in the states and i don't have my visa number yet for my hagwon. so i'm worried, even though i probably have the same chance of being rejected as i do being struck by lightning. ahh the joys of the human mind. i've been searching the internet for a case where an apostilled FBI check was not accepted and i can't find one.

on epik's website they say in the faq:

Q: Does EPIK accept FBI checks through channelers?

A: Yes. As long as the channeler is one of the official FBI-approved channelers (you can find this information on the FBI website). The check must be able to be apostilled, so all applicants using channelers should inquire regarding apostilles first.

https://www.epik.go.kr/faq.do?page=1&menuNo=339&faqCategoryNo=12

so if even epik is accepting them, they are officially A-OK in general?

I'm going to assume since these were accepted by immigration that it would also be accepted by the Education office?

Since I'm on a F4 visa, the education office is what I'm worried about.

First of all, there are two type of channelers:
#1 - There are many that get results on plain paper and/or with no FBI seal or signature
#2 - There are a few that deliver results on secure paper with the FBI seal and signature.

Type #1 cannot be accepted by immigration, Type #2 can be accepted.

To answer your question, I think most recruiters are unaware of the difference between the two type. So, they have heard stories from other recruiters or had experiences themselves with people using Type #1. Because of that, they are using the "better safe than sorry" approach.

My best recommendation is to ask the questions directly to the Korean government. You can ask by filing a online petition at: http://www.epeople.go.kr/jsp/user/on/eng/intro01.jsp
When you ask, make sure you describe what type of channeler you are using.

Don't worry, although it says "petition" it can be used to ask any question to any government agency in Korea.

After this is done, you will get an answer (but it might be in Korean . . . you can use Google translator to get the general idea). The answer will include a name and contact number from the relevant government agency. You can forward that to your recruiter.

Unfortunately, this might take as much time as getting the FBI result. :-/

I'm looking for more information as well. I'm planning on using NBC Inc, so I'll try to update you guys once I apply for jobs. But if someone has recently had success (or not) with using a channeler, I'd be very appreciative of a response! Thanks!

P.S. Right now, I have a CRC through the FBI that is about to expire but I just recently started looking for jobs, so I'm probably going to wait until this summer to go.
